SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The 36th Santa Barbara International Film Festival didn't roll out the red carpet for stars on opening night, but festival crews did set up two free drive-in movie screens.
Moviegoers were shown parking spaces at Santa Barbara City College lots next to La Playa Stadium across from ShoreLine Beach Cafe.
Toyota is sponsoring the drive-ins and giving away goodie bags to moviegoers who fill out a survey.
Opening night drive-in spaces must be booked the day before.
"Invisible Valley" opened the festival. It is a documentary that showcases the socioeconomic and environmental differences in the Coachella Valley through the eyes of farmworkers. The area is known for its harvest as well as the Coachella music festival, golf, tennis and equestrian events that draw tourists.
The film started at 8p.m. on one screen, and 8:30 p.m. on the other, allowing SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling to welcome guests and introduce the film's director before both screenings.
"It was important for the show to go on. We wanted to send a message of hope, of optimism, of positivity, but in a very safe way," said Durling.
Durling still dressed up in a tux for the occasion and brought along a black and white dog he rescued from SPARC in Santa Paula. Durling named her Sophia after film star Sophia Loren.
Actors will appear virtually in the days to come and even volunteers are excited to see them.
Volunteer Lupe Gonzales said, "I want to see Carey Mulligan."
Movie goers who arrived early have the best car seats, but folks can watch from home, too.
Movie Critic Larry Gleeson was excited to see the opening documentary.
"Invisible Valley looks like is it going to be an excellent documentary with some very poignant topics," said Gleeson.
Gleeson and his guest actress Meredith Mcminn received a bag of movie treats from Toyota.
"I haven't opened it yet, popcorn and candy I'm told, which makes for a perfect movie experience shall we say, " said Mcminn.
Bill Murray will receive the Maltin Modern Master award this Friday night.
Fans won't be able to get autographs during this pandemic year, but they are likely to be entertained during ten days of films, virtual tributes and panel discussions.
