CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Capitol Theatre, closed since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, will celebrate its 100th birthday on April 8. Then, 100 days later on July 17, the Gordon Square landmark will reopen to the public for its first screening in over a year.
“It’s been difficult having the Capitol go dark for so long, but this centennial milestone gives us hope for its future,” said Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization executive director Adam Stalder in a press release. “We’re honored to reunite our community with our beloved theatre during these 100 days.”
The theatre’s year-long centennial celebration begins next Thursday when the public is invited to dress up in their best movie-themed apparel and take photos in front of the Capitol’s marquee from 3-5 p.m. A photographer, props and limited-edition Capitol Centennial merchandise will be available on site.
Proceeds from merchandise, also available online, will go to the Capitol Centennial & Sustainability Fund. The campaign seeks to raise $100,000 towards the theatre’s reopening and its future. Donations are being accepted at dscdo.org/capitol.
DSCDO is also presenting a film at the virtual Cleveland International Film Festival, which opens April 7. “Landfall” is described as an unflinching look at Puerto Rico’s struggles against colonialism, exploitation and natural disaster. Capitol fans can use the promo code CAPITOL for $1 off their ticket purchase and then join an online gathering at dscdo.org/capitol on April 8 at 7:30 p.m. to discuss the film and its relevance to Cleveland, and share memories of the Capitol.
The theatre, currently the only movie theater on Cleveland’s west side, opened as a silent movie house in the spring of 1921. It closed in the early 1980s and was neglected for many years. Restoration began in 2008 and the theatre reopened the following as a three-screen venue operated by Cleveland Cinemas. In January, the Capitol’s two upper-floor auditoriums were renovated with modern, plush recliners.
Details for July 17 reopening, which will follow COVID-19 safety protocols, will be announced at a later date with a number of free tickets reserved for Detroit Shoreway residents. The theatre’s 100-year anniversary celebration will conclude with a Centennial Gala in April 2022.
