When you’ve been spending most of the last year at home, coming up with new and inventive ways to stay entertained can be a challenge. Especially if you live in a household with multiple people of different ages. And if you’re like a lot of the population whose quarantine ritual has been binge watching as many movies as possible, it’s time to put all of that hard work to use in the form of movie trivia games.
Chances are that you’ve probably seen a good variety of films in the last year or so. The ones that cross genres, languages, and concepts. For the movie fans, casual movie watchers, film geeks, and certified cinephiles, movie trivia games are a great way to test your knowledge, and maybe even learn some fun facts about your favorite films. But more importantly, it’s a chance to connect with other people at a time when it’s becoming increasingly hard to do so. And of course, some think there are even long and short term health benefits to playing trivia games, in terms of stimulating your memory and improving cognitive functioning.
Another great thing about trivia games: they can change your mood. Whether you’re the ultra-competitive type, or the kind of opponent who simply enjoys playing with other people no matter who wins.
Because you probably don’t have time to scroll through the never-ending behemoth of online products (don’t want to take away from streaming and other daily activities), we put together a collection of trivia games that are great for film fans of all kinds. Featured among the list are movie-inspired card games, board games, and even an adult drinking game that will make your game night one to remember. Below, find our list of the best movie trivia games.
Cinephile: A Card Game
This is a great game for film nerds and novices alike. It includes 150 cards and multiple ways to play. Inside the box are five games sorted into categories from easiest to expert: Movie Geek, Film Nerd, and Cinephile. Don’t be fooled by how easily you may get past the beginners level, this is the kind of game that will challenge you to think fast. The objects of the game depends on what level you reach, but the main point is to pick cards to take turns answering the questions pulled from the card deck. The questions could be as simple as naming an actor who starred in a movie, or as complicated as the six-degrees of separation-style level where you’re tasked with connecting co-stars not only by the movies they appeared in together, but other films from their respective catalogs. If you have a good memory and tend to know the names of everyone in the film — not just the star — this game will certainly put you to the test.
Parker Brothers Trivial Pursuit Silver Screen Edition
With more than a century in the board game business, Parker Brother is probably one of the more recognizable brands out there. Trivial Pursuit Silver Screen Edition is a subsidiary of the original installment but with film-related topics. The game comes with 1,000 cards, 6,000 questions featuring answers in six movie categories: settings, titles, off screen, on screen, production, and portrayals.
Blockbuster Returns: The Movie Party Game II
Anyone who remembers renting movies on VHS can appreciate the nostalgia of this game. A sequel to an earlier version, The Blockbuster Returns: The Movie Party Game II offers up a fun time for the whole gang, and the packaging alone makes a good conversation starter. The box comes with 100 new movie cards and 30 head-to-head cards covering the best in blockbuster cinema from the last 10 years. You won’t have to be a film expert to win the game. The objective is to be the first to collect two movie cards from each of the four categories: “From Another Planet,” “Remakes and Reboots,” “Heart Warmers,” and “Not For Kids.” To get started, select “Head-to-Head” mode on the Big Potato Buzzer App and hand it to two players. One player from each team will sit opposite the other with a phone in between them. Count down from one to three, then flip over a “Head-to-Head” card which will reveal one of the four categories. The first player will have to name a movie that fits in the category but they’ll need to press the buzzer to start the 15-second countdown. Their opponent must now try to answer the question before the 15 seconds are up. Players go back and forth answering the question until one of them runs out of time.
Cinelinx: A Card Game for People Who Love Movies
The title is pretty self-explanatory, but it doesn’t give the full scope of what sets this card game apart from the rest. In short, the game is basically dominoes for movie buffs. Designed for two to six players, Cinelinx: A Card Game for People Who Love Movies includes 320 cards sprinkled among categories including actors, directors, movie titles, scenes, quotes, games, and genres. The questions are spread out across the ‘70s, ‘80, ‘90s, and today. There’s also a special director’s cut card.
Spin Master Games: Best of TV and Movies Board Game
For those who fall into the category of extreme binge watchers, this board game is a great way to test your knowledge, and have a little fun in the process. This entertaining trivia game from Spin Master is made for two to six people, and to be honest, it might just stump some of the younger players. On the flip side, it also has a multigenerational vibe to it that your family (or friend circle) will enjoy. The game is designed to keep you occupied for hours, and there’s lots of ground to cover with over 400 cards, featuring 1500 questions about everything from “Glee” to “Grease.”
Movies Trivia Game
Another easy to learn and play option is the Movies Trivia Games, which can be played by two to eight people. The game contains 1200 trivia questions with four categories on each card. The categories include comedy, cartoon, action, adventure, drama, horror movies, musicals, and sci-fi. This compact trivia game makes a perfect party activity, and a family-friendly gaming alternative. Also, the box is small enough to pack in your luggage, backpack or purse, making it that much easier to bring it along on your next vacation or a daylong outing.
Amazon Exclusive Movie Trivia Party Game
When it comes to the level of difficulty among trivia games, this game won’t be too hard to manage. Trust us, you won’t have to strain your brain to answer the questions in this trivia game, and that’s not a bad thing. The questions cover a pretty large span of films, and is made for two or more players. The Amazon Exclusive Movie Trivia Party Game contains 110 double-sided cards, and more than 800 questions on Hollywood classics and newer films.
Movie Quotes Drinking Game
It’s not uncommon to enjoy an adult beverage at game night, so why not combine the two? The Movie Quotes Drinking Game features 54 movie cards with three quotes on each card. The purpose of the game is to earn the most points and by default, drink the least amount of alcohol. To start, one person rolls the dice to see which of the three quotes they will have to recite and whoever answers the questions correctly, earns a point. Whoever answers wrong has to drink. No matter who wins the game, there will be enough drinks floating around to make this game well worth the $12.99 price tag. You can play this movie trivia drinking game with at least two people.
