Today, a potentially record-breaking run came to an abrupt end on Netflix’s Top 10 charts—at the hands of the most unexpected of movies.
As forecasted, Yes Day had absolutely no trouble dominating the Netflix Top 10 charts over the past week-and-a-half. The Jennifer Garner family film became the first movie in 2021 to spend more than seven consecutive days atop the rankings after its ninth straight showing in the #1 position on Sunday.
And with no major new films heading Netflix’s way this week, Yes Day’s historic run could have stretched on for much, much longer. But little did we know that the 2021 dramatic thriller Deadly Illusions would step up and take over the top spot.
Starring the likes of Kristen Davis, Dermot Mulroney and Greer Grammer, Deadly Illusions centers on a novelist named Mary who is stricken with writer’s block. In order to help her family escape a bad investment made by her husband, Mary hires a nanny for her children. And, as you can probably already guess, the nanny is an absolute psycho who attempts to upend Mary’s life.
Deadly Illusions actually made its Netflix debut back on March 18 when it premiered in third place on the daily charts. For the two days following, the Kristen Davis thriller rose to the #2 position. And then today, finally, Deadly Illusions took the first-place spot from Yes Day.
The Jennifer Garner film had become the first movie on Netflix to spend at least nine consecutive days atop the Top 10 charts since Hubie Halloween captured 14 straight appearances back in October 2020. In fact, only five other movies—Spenser Confidential, Hubie Halloween, Project Power, The Wrong Missy and The Kissing Booth 2—have ever spent at least nine consecutive days in first place.
Currently, that brings Yes Day’ s Top 10 score to 98 points, which is already good enough for 13th place on the 2021 rankings for Netflix’s most popular movies. And while Yes Day did sink down to third place on today’s rankings below Deadly Illusions and Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal, I would expect the Garner film to continue to rank highly on the daily charts (and possibly recapture the #1 position).
So while Deadly Illusions hasn’t received very good reviews from critics or a positive ratings from IMDB users, the thriller’s keeps-you-guessing narrative has been alluring enough to make it the #1 movie on the world’s most popular streaming platform—not bad! We’ll see if Deadly Illusions can now put together a Top 10 streak of its own.
