The partnering Screenwriters Colony unveiled a new online series for emerging film scribes featuring Charlie Kaufman, Nancy Meyers, Stella Meghie and Leslie Dixon.
The Nantucket Film Festival will go ahead with its 2021 edition amid the coronavirus pandemic, from June 17 to 28, with a first-time hybrid event that combines virtual streamings online with physical screenings in drive-in theaters and small garden settings.
On Monday, the annual summer festival's partnering Screenwriters Colony also unveiled plans for an online series for emerging film scribes titled Screenwriter Sessions Live: Craft and Conversation. The online course, continuing a traditional focus at Nantucket on excellence in screenwriting, will feature Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), Nancy Meyers (Something’s Gotta Give), Stella Meghie (The Photograph) and Leslie Dixon (Mrs. Doubtfire).
Their live instructional sessions, to take place over five installments running from April 6 to 30, will share insights on storytelling, craft and the film industry through a mix of lectures and conversations. Full Frontal with Samantha Bee producer Kaitlin Fontana will host the screenwriting series. Fontana's feature film script Girlfriend on Mars is on the 2019 Black List.
"Screenwriters Colony and NFF have collaborated on programs championing screenwriters for many years. Together we are excited to present this new opportunity for aspiring storytellers to learn directly from some of the greatest screenwriters of our time, in a uniquely intimate and intensive format," Screenwriters Colony director Lydia Cavallo Zasa said in a statement.
The NFF will go online this year by expanding the event from six to 11 days for a hybrid format amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. All in-person screenings and conversations will need to comply with local and state public safety guidelines before they go ahead. The NFF will make more planning announcements in the coming weeks, ahead of the full program, schedule and venues being unveiled on May 6.
“We look forward to welcoming everyone back to the 26th festival in celebration of our island community, the craft of our filmmakers, and the magic of storytelling. We are also absolutely thrilled to expand our programming in partnership with Screenwriters Colony to offer these wonderful sessions with such incredible storytellers like Charlie, Nancy, Stella and Leslie," Mystelle Brabbee, executive director of the Nantucket Film Festival, said in a statement.
