Look, you didn’t know you needed a photo of Lady Gaga and Adam Driver dressed in chic winter wear and standing before a soft, snowy mountain on the set of House of Gucci. But that’s okay. Lady Gaga knew—which is why she shared such a photo on her Instagram Tuesday, offering a behind-the-scenes look at her and Driver in their upcoming film.
The hotly anticipated drama, directed by Ridley Scott, is based on the true story of Patrizia Reggiani (Gaga) and Maurizio Gucci (Driver), an heir of the eponymous luxury fashion house. The duo married in 1973 and had two children, Allegra and Alessandra. During their marriage, Reggiani was a well-known socialite who loved the tonier things in life. (“I would rather weep in a Rolls-Royce than be happy on a bicycle,” she once said). Gucci, meanwhile, was known for his reckless spending, eventually selling his shares of the fashion company to Investcorp, a Bahrain-based merchant bank.
In 1985, Gucci filed for divorce from Reggiani, leading to an acrimonious separation that was finally settled in 1991. A few years later, the 46-year-old heir was shot and killed by a hitman outside of his Milan office. It was later revealed that Reggiani organized the killing. She was arrested in 1997, and dubbed the “Black Widow” by the Italian press. The trial was a media spectacle rife with shocking twists and turns, including the revelations of Reggiani’s accomplices, like her personal psychic, and the $365,000 price tag she paid for the assassination. Reggiani herself was sentenced to 29 years in prison.
She was released in 2014, and captured on camera making flip remarks about Gucci’s death. “Patrizia, why did you hire a hitman to kill Maurizio Gucci? Why didn’t you shoot him yourself?” a reporter asked her at the time.
“My eyesight is not so good,” she replied. “I didn’t want to miss.”
Scott has been trying to get House of Gucci off the ground for well over a decade. At one point, Angelina Jolie and Leonardo DiCaprio were rumored to star in the drama, based on a script by Andrea Berloff. Then, Scott tapped out and rumors swirled in 2012 that his daughter, Jordan Scott, would take over instead, with Penelope Cruz signing on for the lead role. The film switched gears once again in 2016, when it was reported that Wong Kar Wai was set to take the reins, directing a vehicle that would now star Margot Robbie.
