The 45th Cleveland International Film Festival will take place entirely online from April 7-20, but there still will be Opening Night and Closing Night movies — and, new this year, one billed as a Centerpiece Screening.
CIFF announced that the virtual CIFF45 Streams will kick off on Wednesday, April 7, with "Together Together," a dramatic comedy starring Ed Helms (the Oberlin College grad best known from "The Office" and "The Daily Show") that was well received earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival.
The festival describes "Together Together" as "a film exploring contemporary connections and the particulars of love." Here's the plot, via CIFF: "The story focuses on two very different characters: Matt (Ed Helms), a successful app developer in his 40s who is ready to start a family but finds himself without any romantic prospects; and, Anna (Patti Harrison), a young barista with a complicated past who is hired as Matt's surrogate." The film was written and directed by Nikole Beckwith and also stars Tig Notaro, Julio Torres, Anna Konkle and Sufe Bradshaw.
The Opening Night presentation includes the 7 p.m. screening of "Together Together" on April 7 as well as a post-film Q&A. Tickets for Opening Night are $25 per person, or $20 for CIFF members. CIFF Super Streamer members are not required to purchase a ticket, as access to the film is included in the Super Streamer level of membership on a first-come, first-served basis. (Go here for information about the three levels of membership to watch films at CIFF45 Streams.)
New this year is the Centerpeice Screening, which takes place at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13 — the day the marks the festival's 45th birthday.
The film in that slot is "Summertime," directed by Carlos López Estrada, who directed 2018's "Blindspotting," a comedy-drama starring Daveed Diggs. CIFF says "Summertime" is "a love song to the West Coast that blends poetry and hip-hop with themes of home and belonging. Taking place over one summer day in bustling Los Angeles, the film showcases 25 young local poets, using their impassioned slam pieces like a musical does songs."
"Summertime" is distributed by Ashland-based Good Deed Entertainment.
Tickets for the screening of "Summertime," which includes a post-film Q&A, are $10, or $8 for CIFF members. Passholder-level members are not required to purchase a ticket, as access to the film is included in passholder-level membership on a first-come, first-served basis.
CIFF stays in a summer mood with its Closing Night film at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 17: "Best Summer Ever," directed by Michael Parks Randa and Lauren Smitelli. The festival calls the film a "joyful and heartwarming teen genre musical" that "follows Sage and Anthony who — after falling in love at a summer dance camp — find themselves unexpectedly reunited at high school and dealing with the struggles of being true to your authentic self."
Tickets for the "Best Summer Ever" screening and its post-film Q&A are $10, or $8 for CIFF members. Passholder-level members are not required to purchase a ticket.
The full CIFF45 Streams lineup will be released on clevelandfilm.org at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 19.
