TARPON SPRINGS — The weekend’s most-watched Netflix selection was directed by Tarpon Springs native Aaron Moorhead and, as of Monday morning, maintained its No. 1 spot on the streaming platform.
Titled Synchronic and starring Anthony Mackie of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series, the movie follows a New Orleans paramedic seeking to discover the secrets of a deadly synthetic drug so he can find his partner’s missing daughter.
“Thank you & I love you to everyone who ever believed in this indie film,” Moorhead, 33, tweeted Sunday morning.
Moorhead was also cinematographer for the movie, which he made with directing partner and screenwriter Justin Benson of San Diego.
Moorhead and Benson met while interning for the Los Angeles-based production company run by Ridley Scott, the man behind such films as Alien, Bladerunner and Blackhawk Down.
Moorhead and Benson — both now live in Los Angeles — released their first of four independent feature films as co-directors in 2012.
Next up for the duo is directing several episodes of Moon Knight to stream on Disney+ as part of the ongoing Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Moon Knight, starring Oscar Isaac, best known as Poe Dameron in the most recent Star Wars trilogy, is based on the comic book series of the same name. An ex-Marine and CIA operative becomes a costumed, crime-fighting Earth avatar of the Egyptian god of vengeance.
