Longtime Route 1 dining destination and pu pu platter purveyor Kowloon has weathered the coronavirus pandemic like so many of its restaurant peers, offering takeout and delivery while its dining room is closed. This week, the Saugus restaurant announced that it has plans to transform its expansive parking lot into a drive-in movie theater and carhop, an interactive experience that it hopes to implement this summer.
“Never in my wildest dreams did we ever think this would happen,” said Bob Wong, who owns the restaurant with his siblings, in a press release. “We are adapting and will keep going.”
Wong shared that, in addition to adding a big screen TV outside, Kowloon plans to deliver food and drinks to diners in their cars, and that guests will be able to bring lawn chairs and sit outside. He told The Boston Globe that he plans to ask the Saugus Board of Selectmen for permission this week; if approved, he wants to start this new service by the end of May, screening films like “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and “Grease.”
It wouldn’t be the first time that Kowloon, which turns 70 this year, has creatively transformed its outdoor space. Last summer, the restaurant added a temporary tiki bar and dining area behind the restaurant, complete with thatched roofs, faux palm trees, and outdoor entertainment.
Kowloon’s plans to transform its outdoor area may be supported by reopening strategies in other states like New Hampshire, which will allow outdoor dining starting May 18. The tentative plan in Massachusetts is to reopen on May 18 while following a four-phased approach, starting with the reopening of limited industries that require minimal face-to-face interactions.
