The Milky Way Drive-In, the new pop-up outdoor movie theater planned for Ballpark Commons in Franklin, will open Friday as planned, with online-only ticketing and a full schedule of movies for the rest of May.
A joint venture of the Milwaukee Milkmen, the independent-league baseball team, and Franklin Tourism, the Milky Way is the Milwaukee area's first new drive-in theater in decades.
Here's what you need to know:
Where is it?
The Milky Way Drive-In will operate in the north parking lot at Ballpark Commons, 7900 Crystal Ridge Drive, next to the Milwaukee Milkmen's home stadium.
How much to get in?
Admission is $35 per car per movie, limited to the number of seatbelts in the vehicle. Unlike most theaters, the Milky Way isn't selling individual tickets.
Mike Zimmerman, CEO of Ballpark Commons developer ROC Ventures and owner of the Milwaukee Milkmen, said via email that, for now, ticket sales will be online only, at milkywaydrivein.com. He said they expect the drive-in's opening weekend to sell out.
What is the theater showing?
The plan for the Milky Way is to have two movies nightly (three on weekends), whenever the Milkmen are on the road. (Right now, their season is on hold, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.) The first movie of the night will be firmly kid-focused; later movies are expected to be a little more grownup. The titles will all be second-run features or "classics." Friday, for example, the drive-in is showing "Onward," the Pixar action-fantasy movie, at 6 p.m., and "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbes and Shaw," the spinoff action comedy with Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, at 8:45 p.m. (The rest of the month's lineup is available at the drive-in's website.)
How big a drive-in are we talking about?
The Milky Way's operators say it can accommodate about 150 vehicles. The movies will be showing on a 40-foot outdoor LED screen (which is why some of the movies can start before it's dark). You can listen to the movie via outdoor speakers, an FM tune-in (check the theater for details) or via "Milky Way Audio" on the Listen Everywhere app (see the website for the password).
What about food? And drink?
Because it's adjacent to the Milwaukee Milkmen stadium, the Milky Way has a full run of concessions, from burgers and hot dogs to popcorn and candy. Soda, beer and hard seltzer are also on the menu. Food is ordered via an app, and delivered by car-hop service. (There also are plans to have food trucks on site.)
What about social distancing?
Part of the reason you're hearing talk of a drive-in revival is that drive-ins have built-in social distancing: You're in your car.
The Milky Way says it's aiming to account for the times you have to leave your car. It's recommending people heading for the concession stand or the restrooms wear a face mask, and social-distancing signage will help people keep their distance. And there'll also be hand sanitizer available.
The drive-in is discouraging people from sitting outside their vehicles; if they do, they're suggesting masking up.
