“Once Were Brothers.“ Robbie Robertson and The Band is a confessional, cautionary and occasionally humorous tale of Robertson’s young life and the creation of one of the most enduring groups in the history of popular music, The Band.
Once Were Brothers blends rare archival footage, photography, iconic songs and interviews with Robertson’s friends and collaborators including Martin Scorsese, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison and more.
“WBCN and The American Revolution“ is a landmark documentary that tells the true story of the early days of the radical, underground radio station, WBCN-FM. The film is set against the dazzling and profound social, political and cultural changes that took place in Boston and nationally in the late 1960s and early 70s, and is filled with rare and original archival audio and video. Produced and directed by Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Bill Lichtenstein.
“Other Music“ is a documentary about an influential and uncompromising New York City record store that was vital to the city’s early 2000s indie music scene. But when the store is forced to close, a cultural landmark was lost. The documentary captures the store’s vital role in the musical and cultural life of the city, and highlights the artists whose careers it helped launch.
“Nico, 1988” features a tour de force performance from Trine Dyrholm’s as the aging Nico (aka Christa Pffgen), interpreting rather than impersonating the famed singer-songwriter as she approaches 50. Leading a solitary existence in Manchester Nico’s life and career are on the ropes, a far cry from her glamorous days as a Warhol superstar and celebrated vocalist for The Velvet Underground. Nico’s new manager Richard (John Gordon Sinclair) convinces her to hit the road again and tour Europe to promote her latest album. Struggling with her demons and the consequences of a muddled life, she longs to rebuild a relationship with the son Ari (Sandor Funtek) she lost custody of long ago.
“Bad Reputation.“ Joan Jett is so much more than “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll.” It’s true, she became mega-famous from the number-one hit, and that fame intensified with the music video’s endless play on MTV. But that staple of popularity can’t properly define a musician. Jett put her hard work in long before the fame, ripping it up onstage as the backbone of the hard-rock legends The Runaways, influencing many musicians — both her cohort of punk rockers and generations of younger bands.
“Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me” is a feature-length documentary about legendary Memphis band Big Star. While mainstream success eluded them, Big Star’s three albums have become critically lauded touchstones of the rock music canon. A seminal band in the history of alternative music, Big Star has been cited as an influence by artists including REM, The Replacements, Belle & Sebastian, Elliot Smith and Flaming Lips, to name just a few.
