Movie theaters are scheduled to roll credits again sometime midsummer, in Phase 3 of the state’s reopening plan. But what will it be like to catch a flick during the coronavirus pandemic?
Parent company of Showcase Cinemas, National Amusements, gave the Herald a glimpse at how the company will operate its cineplexes when they first reopen.
“It’s going to be a different experience,” said National Amusements Vice President Mark Malinowski.
Just like at grocery stores and pharmacies, patrons can expect social distance markers in the lobbies of Showcase’s dozen locations statewide. Malinowski said each of the auditoriums will also be outfitted with new air purifying systems.
Shows might sell out faster: Ticket booking will be limited to social-distanced audience members.
“So there will be more space between individuals and groups in the seats,” Malinowski said.
Concessions will also have “protective coverings” and guests will be encouraged to pre-order food and beverages through apps and websites. Employees will temperature- and symptom-check before shifts.
Showcase Cinemas hopes to open theaters in Rhode Island in June, and Massachusetts in July. Cinema operators have their eyes on summer blockbuster Tenet, written and directed by Christopher Nolan, which they would like to use as a tent pole for cineplex’s comeback.
“Everybody’s hoping that we tie that to Tenet, the Warner Brothers’ movie,” Malinowski said.
