She’s also a nominee for her performance in Coming 2 America when MTV’s ceremony returns on May 16 after a yearlong hiatus.

After an Oscars that could’ve used a charismatic host, Leslie Jones is bringing her singular brand of commentary to the 2021 MTV Movie & TV Awards. On Wednesday, it was reported that the Saturday Night Live alum will host the show live from Los Angeles after its yearlong hiatus.

When Jones takes the stage on May 16, she’ll also have a chance to win an award. She’s nominated for best comedic performance for her role in Coming 2 America alongside Eddie Murphy. Some of the most-nominated titles Jones will riff on include WandaVision, which leads the TV categories with five nominations and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, which has a field-leading three nominations in the movie categories. Other projects nominated for honors ranging from best kiss to best fight include Emily in Paris, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Bridgerton, and Promising Young Woman.

The MTV Movie & TV Awards are bouncing back for their first live show in a year with two nights of celebration. On Sunday, May 16, the main awards will be presented at 9 p.m. ET. That will be followed by the first Movie & TV Awards: Unscripted on Monday, May 17, which honors the best in reality TV. Viewers can vote through April 30.

Jones is no stranger to a high-profile hosting gig, following her departure from SNL in 2019. She’s emceed the 2017 BET Awards, 2020’s Supermarket Sweep reboot, and coverage of the Rio Olympics after accepting an impromptu invite from NBC. If all goes well at this year’s MTV Movie & TV Awards, maybe Jones could bring hosting back to Oscars for 2022? She’s become a staple for pop culture hot takes on the internet, live-tweeting everything from Game of Thrones to Queen Latifah’s The Equalizer. Jones even shared videos of herself reacting to the 2021 Oscars, writing at one point, “Lord the long speeches the lady from Minari was funny as hell but good grief!!”

When Anthony Hopkins was a no-show for best actor, Jones, unlike Joaquin Phoenix, would have given us a lot more than a shrug to send us into the night.
