A movie by any other name - Hot Springs Sentinel

I spent a portion of my Saturday watching a science fiction film from 1964. In the movie, a mysterious gas attack kills off almost everyone on Earth. We discover that aliens are invading and they have employed bulletproof killer robots to finish off the remaining survivors. The robots are assisted in their campaign of terror by zombies, which they have created from the folks they killed. The movie is "The Earth Dies Screaming." I will not spoil the ending for you other than to say the title is not accurate.

This got me thinking about all of the movies that have inaccurate titles. Take, for instance, "Die Hard." Bruce Willis does not die in the movie. He is very hard to kill in the movie but he does not die. I guess the title could refer to the bad guys in the movie but, all in all, they die fairly easily to Bruce's Detective John McClain. Maybe the car battery company paid the movie's producers to use that title. That would make more sense than what actually happened in the movie.

Next, we come to "Candyman." This title brings to mind someone who can take a rainbow, wrap in a sigh, soak in the sun and make a groovy lemon pie. However, alas, that is not what happens in this movie. Suffice to say this Candyman does not make a chocolate sunrise by sprinkling it with dew. He is none too kind to dogs and he does make a sort of stew but believe me it is not made from candy hearts.

Now we come to the classic movie "Grease." From the title, one may conjure up a plot of a lonely fry cook who finds love with a new waitress that begins working at his diner. Oh, no, that is not what you get with "Grease." Instead, you get a teenage musical that takes place in the '50s with a cast that looks like they are in their 30s.

Another movie that I thought would fall into this category was "Inherit the Wind," the 1960 Spencer Tracy film. I had never watched this film before and when I queued it up, I was looking to be able to add it to this column. That was not what I found; actually, I think the title is very appropriate.

The title comes from the Bible, Proverbs Chapter 11, Verse 9: "He that troubles his own house shall inherit the wind: and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart." Essentially, this means that anyone who causes trouble or unrest in his family, his town, or even his country, invites trouble and chaos.

This film brings many things to light and the meaning of the film can be interpreted several ways. It is certainly a catalyst for thought. The ideas and philosophies presented in this film certainly can be applied to our world today.

The old saying about not judging a book by its cover could certainly apply to films. I would not judge a movie by its title. Maybe there is a lesson about judgment across the board. However, that would be a "Never Ending Story" and I am "Out of Time."
