LAFAYETTE — The historic Park Theater, shuttered since 2005, could re-open as early as next year, the City Council heard Monday.

A representative of the Park Theater Trust, a non-profit that wants to revive the place as a cinema, arts and culture hub, said the organization is now in talks to finalize purchasing the property.

The aim is to close escrow by Aug. 31, the representative told the council on Monday. The goal is to open the theater in December next year.

“Oh my gosh,” Mayor Susan Candell said about those who have been working to save the theater. “I am so grateful to all of you who have been been working so hard. Oh, my gosh. Not everything is awful right now. This happened.”

The estimated purchasing price is about $3 million, according to city documents.

Built in 1941, the theater totals 4,850 square feet and seats 344, plus the property on Golden Gate Way includes a four-plex apartment building.

The Park Theater was designed by cinema architect William B. David, whose other Bay Area theaters include the Century Cinemas in Corte Madera, Lark Theater in Larkspur and the Rialto Cinemas Cerrito in El Cerrito.

The Park Theater is considered an example of Streamline Moderne, an international style of Art Deco architecture and design that emerged in the 1930s and was inspired by aerodynamic design.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
