Cinemas remain closed in Alabama to help stop the spread of coronavirus, but drive-in movie theaters are open for business. Here’s what’s playing this weekend at drive-ins in Boaz, Centre, Guin, Russellville and Flomaton, plus details on their social distancing guidelines. There’s also a pop-up drive-in event on Saturday in Birmingham, courtesy of the Sidewalk Film Center and Cinema.

SAND MOUNTAIN TWIN DRIVE-IN

10480 U.S. 431, Boaz, 256-593-5599.

Open Friday-Sunday, rain or shine. Box office opens 7 p.m. Pet friendly. Has two screens. Showtimes approximate; first movie begins when darkness permits. Admission $15 per carload, credit and debit cards accepted.

Screen One: “Valley Girl,” 7:55 p.m.; “The Addams Family,” 9:45 p.m.

Screen Two: “Trolls World Tour,” 7:55 p.m.; “Dolittle,” 9:35 p.m.

A message posted on the theater’s Facebook page says:

"We have a few rules we have put in place in order for us to stay open during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Vehicles must be 10 feet apart.
  • Customers must stay in vehicle! Please do not sit outside of your vehicle. You may leave the trunk of your SUV open and sit in the back or sit in a truck bed.
  • When visiting concessions, follow the markings we have in place, and maintain 6 feet apart. This means everyone, including couples, only when visiting concessions. Only concessions available are popcorn, candy and drinks at this time.
  • Restrooms will remain open. Just please remember to keep a safe distance.

“Please no rude comments. We are just trying to keep everyone safe! Thank you! Stay safe and we hope to see everyone over the weekend!”

There’s no mention on the website or Facebook page about limiting the total number of cars coming in.

411 TWIN DRIVE-IN THEATER AND GRILL

300 Cherokee County 265, Centre, 256-927-2855 for showtimes, 256-927-6375 for snack bar.

Open Friday-Sunday. Gate opens at 6:45 p.m. Has two screens. Admission $15 per carload, cash only at the gate.

Screen One: “Valley Girl,” 7:50 p.m.; “The Addams Family,” 9:45 p.m.

Screen Two: “Trolls World Tour,” 7:45 p.m.; “Dolittle,” 9:30 p.m.

The snack bar offers burgers, barbecue, chicken fingers, popcorn, hot wings, pizza, nachos, candy, ice cream, soft drinks and more.

On its Facebook page, the theater says:

"In order to comply with the Alabama state ordinance due to COVID-19, we ask that everyone abide by the NEW RULES for your safety.

  1. Allow 10 feet between vehicles! Screen 1 - (one car between poles) Screen 2 – (skip every other parking space).
  2. Customers must stay in cars except to go to restroom or pick up food.
  3. 3. Call all kitchen orders to 256-927-6375 (food that must be cooked). We will call or text you when your order is ready for pick-up at the side window (beside stage).
  4. Snack orders only such as popcorn/cokes should placed and picked up at the side window (orders that do not have to be cooked).
  5. Masks are encouraged when out of vehicle to bathroom or snack bar.
  6. Maintain a 6-foot distance from others when in line at snack bar or bathroom (only 2 people in bathroom at a time).
  7. Use painted markers on the ground as a guide.

There’s no mention on the website or Facebook page about limiting the total number of cars coming in.

KING DRIVE-IN

Open Friday-Saturday. Ticket booth opens 6 p.m. Has one screen. Admission $7 adults, $4 kids ages 6-11, free for kids age 5 and younger.

On screen: “How to Build a Girl,” 7:40 p.m.; “The Wretched,” 9:20 p.m.

The concession stand is open, the theater’s Facebook page says. In a response to a comment on its Facebook page, the theater said:

“We are encouraging people to bring their own snacks, park to allow plenty of space even though they are inside their vehicles, as well as monitoring and limiting access including to the restrooms. People have been incredibly great to follow social distancing measures and stay well beyond 6 feet of each other in every circumstance.”

There’s no mention of limiting the total number of cars coming in.

BLUE MOON DRIVE-IN

Movie screenings on Saturday and Monday. Friday and Sunday are booked for services by Winfield’s Faith Fellowship Church. Has two screens. Admission $10 per carload. Reservations for specific parking spaces available on the theater’s website. The snack bar menu includes popcorn, candy, nachos, hot dogs, beverages and more, for online orders and delivery to your vehicle.

Friday, May 8: Mothers Day service with Faith Fellowship Church, 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, May 9: Sold out for Screen One, “Trolls World Tour,” 7:45 p.m.; “Dolittle,” 9:15 p.m. Sold out for Screen Two (back screen), "Beetlejuice,” 8 p.m.; “Gremlins,” 9:30 p.m.

Sunday, May 10: Services held by Winfield’s Faith Fellowship Church, 11 a.m.

On its Facebook page, the theater says:

“Please be aware that we are operating under social distancing guidelines. Cars are spaced out with under a 50 percent capacity. Snack bar is online ordering and delivery. And restrooms are available by request and we are working on more efficient ways for the bathroom availability while keeping heightened safety. Although we have the ability now to accept admission at the gate it is highly recommended to pre-purchase tickets on our website at BlueMoonDrivein.com to guarantee your spot, especially if you are driving a distance.”

“Due to reservation requirements and concession delivery to your vehicle, the lots are now marked with street signs for every row and the spaces are numbered. When making your reservation please reference the map given for locations to reserve your exact space.”

Also: “Since parking spaces are over 15 feet apart you will be allowed to sit out around your car but must stay with your car,” the theater’s Facebook page said on April 27.

SIDEWALK STARLITE POP-UP DRIVE-IN

“Clueless," 25th anniversary screening, May 9, presented by Sidewalk Film Center and Cinema. Gate opens 7 p.m., movie starts 7:30 p.m.. Ladd Lot, 113 19th St. North, Birmingham, directly across the street from the 19th Street entrance to The Pizitz building. $15 per car, advance tickets only, sold out.

“This will be a socially distanced event, and we will be honoring all regulations put forth by our local and state governments and public health officials," Sidewalk says in its event post on Facebook. "You should come to the event only with the people you’ve been ‘safer at home’ with and you must remain in your car for the duration of the event. Lawn chairs, blankets etc.. will not be allowed.”

On concessions: “Sidewalk’s Curbside Concessions will be available to order in advance of the film start time – simply place your order online in advance at www.sidewalkfest.com/store, drive to the Second Avenue North entrance of The Pizitz, call us at 205-324-0888 and we’ll bring your favorite movie theater snacks to your car. Then circle the block and find your spot for the drive-in. Curbside pick-up will also be available from The Standard, JuicedUp Essentials, Unos Tacos Birmingham and Piper and Leaf x Pizitz Shop. Curbside Pick-Up is at the 19th Street entrance. Guests will need to order in advance.”

Open Friday-Sunday for new “Screenings at the Swamp” series. Gates open at 7 p.m., movies start at 8 p.m. Single screen. Admission $20 per carload, $10 on Mother’s Day.

Friday, May 8: “Dolittle.”

Saturday, May 9: “I Still Believe” and “Grease."

Sunday, May 10: “ I Still Believe."

On the speedway’s Facebook page, it says:

“Concessions available by Tri County Speedway. We have a few rules put in place for the COVID-19. Vehicles must be at least 8 feet apart. Customers must stay in their vehicle. (No hanging out at other people’s vehicles.) Concessions will be open, please maintain 6 feet apart and follow the markings. Please note: All showings are subject to change due to inclement weather, please follow all rules while on the property, and be sure to adhere to the guidelines presented during your visit! We look forward to seeing you all!”

In responses to comments made on Facebook, organizers said moviegoers can leave the car to go for concessions or visit the restroom. People who have trucks are allowed to sit in the truck beds. It’s also OK to bring your own snacks and drinks.
