Talk about “Risky Business.”
This one has all the makings - a famous actor going into space - for real - to shoot a movie.
According to multiple reports, that is exactly what is happening. Tom Cruise is working with NASA for a movie to be filmed aboard the International Space Station.
NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine confirmed the report on Twitter.
Deadline.com reported the story on Monday saying, “I’m hearing that Tom Cruise and Elon Musk’s Space X are working on a project with NASA that would be the first narrative feature film – an action adventure – to be shot in outer space. It’s not a “Mission: Impossible” film and no studio is in the mix at this stage but look for more news as I get it. But this is real, albeit in the early stages of liftoff.”
According to the New York Times, “NASA has been looking to open the International Space Station to wider commercial use, beyond scientific research for new drugs and novel materials that can only be grown in zero-gravity conditions. That includes space tourism.”
Cruise, 57, has starred in a number of blockbuster films including “Top Gun,” “The Color of Money,” “Rain Man,” “Born on the Fourth of July,” “Jerry Maguire," “Magnolia,” “The Firm,” “A Few Good Men” and the “Mission Impossible” series.
He has won three Golden Globes and three Academy Award nominations.
There is no indication of what the movie will be about or when it may be filmed.
