A new movie coming to Netflix is inspired by a gruesome murder in Upstate New York.

“Things Heard & Seen” stars Oscar-nominated actress Amanda Seyfried as a young artist who discovers her husband and their new Hudson Valley home have sinister secrets after they leave Manhattan for the small town life. The trailer features a bloody ax, mysterious supernatural phenomena, and hints at an affair (or two).

The horror film, also starring James Norton and “Stranger Things” actress Natalia Dyer, is adapted from the novel “All Things Cease to Appear” by Elizabeth Brundage.

According to the Democrat & Chronicle, Brundage got the idea for the story while living in Brighton, N.Y. In 1992, she learned of the death of Cathleen Krauseneck, a Brighton woman who was found in bed with an ax lodged in her head a decade earlier. Her 3-year-old daughter had been in the house for hours with the corpse before Cathleen’s husband James allegedly returned from work to discover the grisly scene.

“I definitely used main points of the crime for the novel,” Brundage told the D&C. “As a novelist I was trying to do right by Cathleen.”

No arrests had been made when Brundage published the book in 2016. Three years later, James Krauseneck was charged with second-degree murder; a pretrial hearing is scheduled for June.

Brundage, who now lives near Albany, said the Netflix film will have different elements from her novel, but both still contain similarities to the real-life 1982 homicide and the people involved.

According to the Democrat & Chronicle, James Krauseneck lied about completing his doctorate to his employers at a Virginia college and later the Eastman Kodak Co. in Rochester; Norton’s character George Clare, who teaches at the fictional Saginaw College, also hides a secret. George and Catherine Clare (Seyfried) move to a home with a dark past; the Krausenecks lived in a house where the previous couple reportedly died of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning after leaving a car engine running in the garage.

“Things Heard & Seen,” co-directed and co-written by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, premieres April 29 on Netflix.
