The winners of the Berlin International Film Festival will be screened for audiences in the German capital in June.
The Berlin International Film Festival has fixed the dates for its planned in-person event in the German capital this summer.
The 71st Berlinale's "Summer Special" will run June 9-June 20, with red carpet galas and public screenings of this year's festival winners. Last week's Berlinale, and the accompanying European Film Market, were online and industry-only events. The summer program will also include an awards gala for this year's Gold and Silver Bear winners.
The festival will invite filmmakers and talents from this year's winners, along with 2021 jury members, to Berlin for the 12-day event. The public screenings will be a combination of open-air and in-cinema presentations, organizers said.
"We are proud of our line-up and happy that the films resonated so well among professionals and press," said Berlinale artistic director Carlo Chatrian. "Even though we hope this edition will stay unique, the great positive energy we felt, even online, encouraged us for the following steps to come."
Berlinale Executive Director Mariette Rissenbeek said while online screenings last week were "very well received" by both the industry and press, and the European Film Market reported strong sales, "we are still missing the collective experience of going to the cinema, and we’re really looking forward to making up for it at the Summer Special."
Germany is still under COVID-19 lockdown but progress on the country's vaccine roll-out, which has been sluggish, is being to pick up pace, and there are encouraging signs that theaters will be able to re-open, at least partially, in the coming months.
For next year, Berlin hopes to return to its traditional in-person format, with both festival and European Film Market set to run Feb. 10-Feb. 20, 2022.
