NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a tweet that his agency working with actor Tom Cruise for a film on board the International Space Station.

Deadline first reported that Cruise was working with NASA. That report also said that SpaceX is involved, but NASA declined to comment when CNBC asked if Elon Musk's space company was working on the project as well.

SpaceX did not respond to CNBC's requests for comment.

NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley buckled into the Crew Dragon capsule for SpaceX Demo-2.

SpaceX

It would make sense for SpaceX to be involved in Cruise's orbital movie plans, given deals the company has signed already to fly non-professional astronauts to the space station.

Earlier this year, SpaceX unveiled that it signed an agreement with Houston-based start-up Axiom, to fly three privately paying tourists to the ISS. That mission is scheduled to launch in the second half of 2021, Axiom said, using a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule. It would last 10 days – two days of travel and eight days on board the space station – and will include an Axiom "commander" to assist the three customers.

SpaceX is also launching four private tourists with Space Adventures, on a "free-flying" mission that will orbit the Earth.
