There are signs of hope for big-screen film lovers. Slowly but surely more movie theaters are reopening.

Cinemark Movie Theaters has announced that many of of its facilities in California are operating again as part of a “phased reopening,” including cineplexes in Danville, Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek, Richmond and San Mateo.

Cinemark also said that, while their venues were closed for the coronavirus pandemic, it adopted new standards for safety and sanitation.

“We have carefully planned for a safe return to movie-going with enhanced cleanliness, safety and training,” the company said in a statement.

Safety protocols include reducing capacity in the theaters with at least 6 feet of separation between seats; one-way traffic in and out of rooms; disinfecting high-touch areas every 30 minutes and disinfecting seats every morning and between shows.

Additional protocols include installing plexiglass barriers at concession stands; mask requirements for customers while in the lobby, restrooms and hallways; and daily wellness checks for employees.

Cinemark also said it will be offering reduced prices on tickets and snacks.

Previously, Cinemark reopened its theaters in Marin County in late September as the state moved the county to a “Tier 2” risk status.
