When Pennsylvanians want a good screen-scare at Halloween they turn to the season’s namesake movie, Halloween, the original 1978 version that birthed the terror series.

Horror movie and television fans in Ohio, Illinois and Indiana share that preference for the story of homicidal Michael Myers escaping from a mental institution and returning to his hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois, to continue his killing spree.

That was one of the discoveries made by Comparitech, a website providing information, tools and comparisons to consumers, when the staff looked at the top 90 horror movies on IMDB through the filter of Google Trends to find each state’s top pick.

Television series The Walking Dead and its spinoff, Fear the Walking Dead, claimed the favorite spot among the most states: Michigan, North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia and Wisconsin for the original and Alabama and Arkansas for the spinoff.

Comparitech noted that some states were more faithful to movies made within their borders than Pennsylvania appears to be to George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, which was filmed in the Pittsburgh area.

As already noted, Illinois viewers went for Halloween, which was set in Haddonfield, Illinois.

Maine residents are big on 2017′s It, a remake of the popular classic set in the small town of Derry, Maine. It is also big in Oklahoma, and It Chapter Two is the top pick by Alaskans.

New York and neighboring Connecticut opt for Sleepy Hollow, which was filmed in North Carolina but set in the 1799 Dutch hamlet of Sleepy Hollow, near New York City.

Massachusetts, home of the Salem Witch Trials, likes 2015′s The Witch , which is set in New England in the 1600s.

Rhode Islanders pull out the candy corn and plop down in front of the television for 2013′s The Conjuring, which is based on the reportedly true story of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren as they try to help exorcise the demons that are possessing a Rhode Island family. Texans also love that one.

Colorado movie buffs appreciate The Shining, the 1980 movie based on Stephen King’s nightmare while staying at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado.

Other movies or television series and the state’s that love them are:

Stranger Things – Idaho, Minnesota, Nebraska and Utah.

Lovecraft Country – Georgia, Maryland and Virginia.

The Twilight Zone – Delaware and New Jersey.

The Turning – Arizona and New Mexico.

The Originals – Louisiana and Mississippi.

The Haunting of Bly Manor – New Hampshire.

The Haunted Mansion – Florida.

House of 1,000 Corpses – Iowa.
