You may have spent much of this year’s lockdown catching up on classic movies, but a Hingham dad and his daughter are instead using the quarantine as an opportunity to recreate them.
Alex Zane, a prosecutor with the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, runs an Instagram account with nearly 15,000 followers called tot_for_tot_remakes. The star is his 5-year-old daughter Matilda, who has channeled her inner actress in G-rated tributes to iconic moments in cinema.
Zane told local press that the idea started in April when he was looking for a creative outlet to occupy himself and his kid during the height of lockdown.
“At one point, we were in the living room hanging out when Matilda climbed atop an old plastic car and started surfing on it,” he told the Hingham Anchor. “I ignored all parental instincts of concern and instead recalled the iconic scene in Teen Wolf where Mike J. Fox surfs on top of Stiles’ van.”
The Zanes made new posts almost every day for a couple of months before throttling back to posting once a week when the state began to reopen this summer. Still, they’ve amassed an impressive backlog of over 70 recreations since April. Here’s a handful of highlights:
- Matilda invoked Matt in a couple of scenes from local favorite Good Will Hunting. (How do you like that applesauce?)
- From Boston to the Cape, Chief Martin Brody’s cigarette is swapped out for a more kid-friendly lollipop as the (stuffed) shark from Jaws looms in the background.
- There are many options for those embracing the spooky season, like these send-ups of The Shining and Psycho.
- Following the Teen Wolf post, dad and daughter are getting a lot of mileage out of sticking on a beard, like in these shots from The Hangover, The Big Lebowski, and Forrest Gump.
- And, naturally, a tribute to Matilda—that is, the 1996 adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel—was inevitable.
“We look for scenes that are iconic enough that people will instantly recognize it, but doesn’t require too much ‘acting’ from Matilda or too much preparation on my part,” Zane told the Anchor. “If you can think of any iconic movie images where a character is either standing still, smiling, or sleeping, let me know,” he said.
