We Would Like to Speak With the Manager About Cringey Horror Movie 'Karen' - Vanity Fair

The first trailer for the film, starring Taryn Manning as the personification of a meme, instantly went viral, drawing comparisons to Jordan Peele’s Get Out for all the wrong reasons.

Every once in a while, a movie comes along that defies all logic. Enter Karen, a horror film that capitalizes on the never-ending trend of entitled white women being the worst, particularly to people of color. And like Karens themselves, the film’s first trailer has gone viral on Twitter for all the wrong reasons.

The upcoming BET original movie is directed by Coke Daniels (Fruits of the Heart), and stars Taryn Manning (Orange Is the New Black) as the titular terror, who has a vendetta against the Black couple, played by Cory Hardrict (American Sniper) and Jasmine Burke (Saints & Sinners), that moves to the neighborhood. As if Manning’s SNL-adjacent wig weren’t clue enough of her Karen-osity, the character is seen calling her cop brother on innocent teens, threatening to call a manager, and accusing her new neighbors of being angry. There’s also a Confederate flag soap dispenser and Karen’s observation that Burke’s character is “slaving away in the kitchen.” At one point, a helpful kid reminds viewers, “She doesn’t like Black people.”

Karen’s apparently complete lack of nuance when it comes to depicting racism and white privilege instantly drew social media scorn. Shortly after the trailer dropped this week, Jordan Peele and his Oscar-winning feature Get Out began trending as the Twitterverse pointed out that the complexity in Peele’s horror satire was nowhere to be found in the Karen trailer. Other users referenced the irony in Manning’s casting, considering her past of seemingly defending Donald Trump and repeating rhetoric from the QAnon conspiracy movement.

Despite Manning’s controversial history, she said she felt a “social responsibility to take on this role,” according to Deadline. “Even if I had to play the villain to affect change around the globe, then I was more than willing to step into the role. What’s been going on is devastating. It’s time for change and for me to be a part of the bigger picture, meant a lot to me.” But given the very real threat posed by everyone from “Central Park Karen” to “Soho Karen,” perhaps this sort of pulpy take would have been best left in the bowels of Twitter.
