Nicolas Cage’s Oregon-filmed pig-napping movie prompts ‘John Oink’ online jokes - OregonLive

For an Academy Award-winning actor, Nicolas Cage has gone on to a career that can best be described as eclectic. Since collecting an Oscar for the 1995 drama, “Leaving Las Vegas,” Cage has steered down a twisty highway, starring in both critically praised films and barely-released duds.

Now, a new Cage project has sparked interest -- and OK, plenty of jokes -- on social media. Maybe that’s because in “Pig,” Cage plays a grizzled character whose life with his truffle-hunting pig is turned upside down when the pig is apparently stolen.

The trailer for “Pig” features a grunting porcine costar, and Cage sniffing a freshly uncovered truffle, as man and pig share a peaceful life in the woods. But then something happens, and Cage’s character heads to Portland, in search of his pig.

In the trailer, moody piano music underscores scenes of Cage apparently visiting restaurants where he once worked as a chef. Lines include “I’m looking for a truffle pig,” “Buy yourself a new pig,” and “Who has my pig?”

Trailers only tell you so much, so there’s no way of knowing if “Pig” will be a critics’ darling, or another dud. About all we know at this point is that Michael Sarnoski directed, and the script is by Sarnoski and Vanessa Block.

It sounds like Cage got some hands-on practice for his role. The Oregonian/OregonLive reported back in 2019, when “Pig” was filming in Portland, that the actor was spotted “standing in the kitchen at Le Pigeon in a motorcycle jacket, working on a dish with Le Pigeon chef Gabriel Rucker.”

The “Pig” trailer is already stirring up discussion online. Comments posted under the YouTube video of the trailer include a comparison to the Keanu Reeves action movie, “John Wick”:

“John Wick: They killed my dog.

Rob: They took my truffle pig.”

On Twitter, someone shared a poster of Reeves from that movie, only with this new title: “John Oink.”

Other YouTube commenters said: “I am not a truffle pig, but it smells like 2nd Oscar for Cage,” and “Is this a parody of modern, ultra gritty revenge movies? That has to be what this is, right?”

While waiting for the July 16 release of “Pig,” Nicolas Cage completists can also ponder the upcoming series for Amazon Prime Video, starring Cage as Joe Exotic. The story of the the self-styled zookeeper, born as Joseph Allen Schreibvogel, became a hit with viewers who watched the Netflix docuseries, “Tiger King.” The upcoming scripted Amazon series is based on a Texas Monthly article titled, “Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into the World of a Man Gone Wild.”

Schreibvogel is currently behind bars, having been convicted on charges ranging from animal abuse to involvement in a plot to have a rival, Carole Baskin, killed.
