There are just some movies that we all need to watch in life. My husband made the mistake of telling me during a Star Wars themed Huntsville Havoc hockey game that he had never watched any of the Star Wars movies. That means he has had a life deprived of Yoda, lightsaber magic, cryogenically frozen Han Solo, and cute, cuddly Ewoks.
This started me thinking about how there are just some movies that are just cannon to the culture of society and it is just a given that we watch them.
Of course, we all have a difference of opinion. Some of you may think that Star Wars is the worst movie set of all time and others might care less about watching them. And then some of you maybe have asked Santa for the complete original trilogy when they were ten years old and spent the entire Christmas break watching them over and over, even twisting their hair up in two side buns to mimic Princess Leia.
But seriously, think about all the movies that have been made and make a list of what you think should be watched.
For me the list is simple.
At the top of my list is Robert Zemeckis’ Back to the Future trilogy. The last one when Doc and Marty go back to the Wild West is the best. Then of course the entire set of Star Wars movies – just watch them in the order they were originally released. Bing Crosby’s White Christmas is next.
There is just something about songs like “Sisters” and “Snow.” Pretty Woman will make you think true love is as real as it gets. I think I have watched that movie a million times with my mother. The original John Carpenter’s Halloween. I swear still today that is the creepiest movie, music and all. Schindler’s List is brilliant. All of the Transformers movies make the cut. So does Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor. Of course, this last mention may have more Hollywood in it than history, but it is a good, long break from reality – love stories mixed with the truth of a historical moment. Just classic. Of course, all of the Harry Potter movies make the cut. And finally, the Goonies. But what am I saying, there are so many that need to be watched. A list of ten, even though some are complete series, is just not enough.
I was happy to know Drew had watched some of the afore mentioned movies. However, no Harry Potter, but at least he enjoyed the Goonies and that makes up for something.
Anyway, what is at the top of your movie list that just has to be watched? I also think everyone should watch Joss Whedon’s movie version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer to see how terrible it is so the true appreciation for Whedon’s work can be felt in the television version of Buffy.
See, opinions about movies do count. You never know what you will discover you enjoy or that you never knew existed.
And poor Drew, he will have to watch Star Wars sometime. Fate is inevitable.
The following day after the hockey game, we were eating breakfast at a restaurant and Back to the Future was playing. It was all subtitled, but the movie was at the part where Marty is playing the guitar and changing the landscape of rock and roll music for that time.
When our food arrived, the movie had us to the part when Doc Brown is trying to get the tree branch off of the power line and he plugs it in just intime for Marty to be sent back into the 1980s. “How are you watching that?” Drew asked me. “I just am. I know almost every line. It’s a classic you know. You should watch it.”
