ANN ARBOR, MI -- Oscar-nominated, classic and current films can be privately watched at the State Theatre and Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor.
The State Theatre first allowed private theater rentals in December, and since then has had several rentals each week, ranging from birthday parties to family screenings, said Michigan Theater Foundation Executive Director Russ Collins.

“The capacity is really, really limited, but the people are having a good time having these special events that they put together just for a very tight group of folks all fitting within… both the state and county health departments regulations,” said Collins.
The theater has safety measures in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic and there’s a 26-person capacity. A staff member will ask health-screening questions and do a temperature check with a contactless thermometer before people enter the theater, the website states.
“We’re really happy about it, people seem to be super happy to have the opportunity to get out of the house and do something different and we’re very pleased to offer the opportunity,” said Collins.
In early February, just a half block down from The State Theatre, the Michigan Theater Foundation also opened the Michigan Theater for private rentals. The Michigan Theater is a 1920′s movie palace with a 1920′s theater organ piano, and 1,600 seats. The COVID-19 capacity is 100, but they haven’t had nearly close to that number, said Collins.
“We had one group that came and they actually sat up in the balcony, and… I think there were six of them and they had a really great time,” said Collins. “They had an organist come in and play and they watched their classic film.”
The State Theatre also opened for public screenings on Feb. 12. They play films on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Although Michigan allowed theaters to open to the public back in Dec. 2020, the State Theatre waited to do so until they saw a sufficient decrease of COVID-19 infections, said Collins.
The public is currently unable to buy concessions and alcoholic beverages at the theaters in hopes that it will help slow down the spread of the virus. Although, if a group were to hold a private event in one of the theater rooms, they’d be able to purchase concessions and alcoholic beverages while wearing a mask, and then remove the mask once back in their room, but only while they are eating or drinking, said Collins.
“Safety is a top priority for us,” Collins said. “As a community organization, the community has supported us extremely well and so we just want to do the best we can to serve the community.”
People can privately rent the State Theatre for $125 per hour, with a three-hour minimum, groups can book the theater for private screenings and bring their own movie on Blu-ray or DVD, or choose from the theater’s selection. At the Michigan Theater, the price goes up to $500 to cover the three-hour minimum.
The base rental fee covers the cost of a theater manager and custodial services, and additional cleaning and film license fees may apply, the website states.
