Each week, several films come and go from the Netflix platform. At this point, there are nearly 4,000 movie options—and dozens of those films have come out in 2021 alone. Some capture the Netflix audience in huge numbers, while most of them fade into oblivion.
Which begs the question: which movies have stood out the most? What have been the truly most viral films in Netflix’s library? What movies have been deemed the best ones available in 2021?
Unfortunately, there’s no definitive way to know. Netflix keeps a tight wrap on its numbers. And because Netflix gains more and more subscribers each passing month, it can be difficult to truly gauge which movies have captured the highest percentages of the Netflix audience.
That was until Netflix introduced its Top 10 list. Those charts allowed me to construct a Top 10 formula that assigns points based on a movie’s ranking each day. Over time, I keep track of each film’s total score to see which ones have consistently performed the best. The beauty of this system is that it puts every movie on an even playing field. So no matter how many Netflix subscribers there are, each movie works with the same point threshold.
I updated those rankings throughout 2020, which resulted in this year-end list.
And now I’m doing the same thing for 2021. At the end of each month, I will update the yearly rankings here on Forbes. So for this story, we will focus on which movies have dominated the first two months of the year.
First, let’s run through the February rankings. As opposed to January—a month when We Can Be Heroes ran away with the #1 spot—the chase for first place was much tighter in February:
- War Dogs - 132 points
- We Can Be Heroes - 120 points
- To All the Boys: Always and Forever - 116 points
- Finding ‘Ohana - 113 points
- AlI Care a Lot - 79 points
- l About the Benjamins - 77 points
- The Secret Life of Pets 2 - 71 points
- Are We There Yet? - 66 points
- The Dig - 63 points
- Red Dot - 56 points
War Dogs only spent four days in the first place position this month, but has also appeared on the Top 10 charts every single day of its 19-day run so far. And at this point, the film appears to have better Top 10 longevity than movies like To All the Boys: Always and Forever.
Past War Dogs, Robert Rodriguez’s We Can Be Heroes has continued its record-breaking run and has spent every single day of February on the Top 10 charts.
Now onto the current yearly rankings. Up to this point in 2021, according to my system, these are the 25 best movies on Netflix:
- We Can Be Heroes - 346 points
- Finding ‘Ohana - 138 points
- War Dogs - 132 points
- The Vanished - 124 points
- To All the Boys: Always and Forever - 116 points
- Homefront - 115 points
- 17 Again - 109 points
- Outside the Wire - 109 points
- The Secret Life of Pets 2 - 105 points
- Good Burger - 91 points
- Unknown - 90 points
- The Next Three Days - 88 points
- The Dig - 87 points
- Penguins of Madagascar - 83 points
- I Care a Lot - 79 points
- All About the Benjamins - 77 points
- Are We There Yet? - 66 points
- Below Zero - 66 points
- Cut Throat City - 58 points
- Pieces of a Woman - 58 points
- Pinkfong & Baby Shark's Space Adventure - 57 points
- Red Dot - 56 points
- Malcolm & Marie - 56 points
- Money Talks - 50 points
- 30 Minutes or Less - 49 points
Without a doubt, We Can Be Heroes has been the standout film of the year. Recently, the film broke a Top 10 record by placing on the charts for 57 consecutive days (that streak has now stretched to 63 days). In total, the film has garnered 411 points—which is just 18 points away from making it the most popular movie on Netflix in the Top 10 era. We should see We Can Be Heroes claim that record by the end of the week.
Past that, Finding ‘Ohana has quietly had a spectacular year. Despite only reaching first place once on the daily charts, the family-friendly film’s 24-day stint on the Top 10 led it past almost every single other movie on Netflix. On the all-time Top 10 charts, Finding ‘Ohana currently ranks 26th.
The other big winners this year have been The Vanished, which has spent 19 days on the charts, and To All the Boys: Always and Forever, which seems ready to exit the Top 10 after just 15 days.
Last but not least, a dark horse candidate this year appears to be The Secret Life of Pets 2. The animated film has spent 29 total days on the Top 10 charts in 2021, and 71 days total tracing back to 2020. On the all-time charts, The Secret Life of Pets 2 ranks tenth.
