The famed Red Ryder BB gun that was the object of Ralphie’s Christmas-gift quest throughout the classic holiday movie, “A Christmas Story,” will be available for our Christmas this year from Daisy Outdoor Products.

The Arizona-based manufacturer will be producing a special edition, exact replica of the gun that Ralphie described again and again in the 1983 movie: “official Red Ryder carbine action, 200-shot, range model air rifle with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time.”

The special edition gun features the traditional fancy Red Ryder logo engraving on the left side of the handsome wood stock. On the right side is an embedded working compass and a deep-set engraved sundial.

“For more than 80 years the Red Ryder has been tops on every youth’s Christmas Wishlist, and this special edition makes that dream come true,” Daisy noted in its announcement of the gun’s release.

The company also noted the practical side of the gun: “While it may not be the gun of choice for protecting the family from Black Bart or taking ducks on the wing, the new Daisy Christmas Dream is the perfect tool for teaching gun safety and marksmanship skills to the youth in your life.”

The actual BB gun that Ralphie eventually received on Christmas morning in the movie resides in A Christmas Story House & Museum in Cleveland, Ohio.

It went on display there in December 2015 after museum owner and founder Brian Jones bought it for the $10,000 asking price on a film collectibles website.

“This has been the holy grail for us—the actual BB gun used by Ralphie in the movie. We have had a commemorative replica on display, along with many original props, costumes and memorabilia from the film, but this is an item we’ve hoped to find for a long time,” Jones said at the time.

The movie gun’s previous owner, Gary Meck, was the production asset manager for the film.

He said 6 guns were made by Daisy for the production. After filming, one of the guns went to Peter Billingsley (who played Ralphie), one to the film archives, and the others to Meck and various members of the production team.

Although Daisy had been making the Red Ryder BB Gun since 1940, the version used in the film never existed as a Daisy production model.

The current style at the time of the film did not have a sundial or compass, as described in the Jean Shepherd story that was the basis for the movie. So Daisy made a Christmas wish come true for little Ralphie by creating this unique model especially for the film.

Located at 3159 West 11th Street in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood, A Christmas Story House & Museum first opened its doors in 2006.

The attraction takes guests on a tour through the home of the Parker family, restored to the original movie appearance.  The tours are interactive, and guests are encouraged to experience and touch everything in Ralphie’s house.

After touring the house, guests can step across the street to the museum and gift shop located across the street.  In the museum, original artifacts from the filming of the movie are on display, including the Red Ryder gun.

But please don’t shoot the Bumpus hounds.
