Anyone hoping to catch “The Green Knight,” “Candyman” or “CODA” in Portland may need to show proof of vaccination along with their movie tickets.
Starting Sept. 8, a group of independent movie theaters in Portland, including the Hollywood Theatre, Laurelhurst Theater, Cinemagic and Cinema 21, will begin requiring proof of vacation against COVID-19 or a negative test result, the theaters announced Friday.
The theaters’ announcements also included Living Room Theaters among those that will begin requiring proof of vaccination, but the downtown Portland theater has not independently made that announcement and could not be reached Sunday for verification.
Broadway Metro in Eugene will also join the effort Sept. 10, the theater said.
National chains with locations in Oregon, like Regal Cinemas and Cinemark, are abiding by state face mask policies, but have not announced any requirements for proof of vaccination. McMenamins movie theaters in Oregon and Washington also has not announced any vaccination requirements.
The new requirement in place at the group of local theaters follows existing face mask rules already in place at movie theaters, and required under a statewide mandate requiring people to mask up in all indoor public places. Movie theater patrons are allowed to remove their face masks to eat or drink, but must otherwise keep the coverings on.
The local movie theaters all said they would accept physical vaccination cards, digital vaccination records or clear photos of vaccination cards. Those showing negative COVID-19 tests need to show negative results from a PCR test taken within the last 72 hours.
Other Portland entertainment venues have already announced new rules requiring proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 tests, including the city’s most prominent performing arts venues, the Moda Center and a slew of other music and arts venues.
“As a community-based organization, requiring proof of vaccination is the right step to protect our audiences and staff,” the Hollywood Theatre said in its announcement. “We believe steps like these are vital to the ongoing survival of the Hollywood and other theaters. In order to feel comfortable returning to theaters in pre-pandemic numbers, audiences need to feel safe going to the movies and to know that their health and well-being is being prioritized.”
