“Host” was named the scariest horror movie of all time, followed by “Sinister” and “Insidious,” according to BroadBandChoices’ 2021 Science of Scare Project.
“In an update to 2020′s Science of Scare study, ‘Host,’ a low budget movie shot entirely on Zoom during the pandemic, was found scientifically to be the scariest film of all time, sending audience heart rates as high as 130 BPM — beating 2020′s winner, ‘Sinister,’” the website said.
Host, set during the COVID-19 pandemic is about six friends who hire a medium to hold a séance on zoom during lockdown, according to IMDb.
“Our audience experienced a 37% uplift in heart rate when watching the movie, from an average of 64 bpm, up to 88 bpm, with the film’s scariest moment sending hearts pounding to 130 bpm (the equivalent of jogging),” BroadBandChoices said.

They conducted a similar study in 2020, and chose films based the short list of movies on the top 30 films from last year in addition to new entries and other movies they may have missed.
The participants were fitted with heart rate monitors and were invited to sit in a specially designed “screaming room” to watch the films under medical and researcher supervision.
After collecting all the data, the study measured the average impact the movies had on heart rate, measured in beats per minute, compared to the average resting BPM of 64.
Other key findings of the research, according to the website include:
- The best jump scare in horror history belongs to “Insidious” (133 BPM) with “The Conjuring,” “Host,” “Sinister” and “A Quiet Place Part 2″ also ranking highly
- Modern horror movies performed better than classics, with just three films more than 20 years old, “Nightmare on Elm Street,” “Halloween” and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” appearing in the top 20.
- “The Exorcist” fell from the top 20 scariest films ever made.
- 2016′s “Terrified” is the scariest foreign language horror film, and the only foreign language movie to break the top 10
