These are the biggest movie updates and reveals you should know following Netflix's very first TUDUM online fan event. At a time when mass public gatherings remain limited, virtual conventions are becoming increasingly popular - and it seems they're here to stay. After DC Fandome and SDCC At Home, this past weekend (September 25) marked the debut of TUDUM, Netflix's opportunity to show subscribers across the world what they'll be getting for their money over the coming months.
Amid the cringe presenting and elaborate, star-studded explanation of what "TUDUM" actually means, Netflix unveiled a range of thrilling trailers, exciting first-looks and blockbuster announcements. As well as covering Netflix's extensive television output - the likes of Stranger Things, The Witcher, The Umbrella Academy, Sex Education and Sandman - TUDUM made plenty of time for feature-length releases, highlighting movies that'll be dropping both before the end of 2021 and beyond.
For those who'd rather not sit through 3 hours of celebrities awkwardly introducing actors they can't see, here's our summary of all the major film details and reveals from Netflix's TUDUM 2021.
Red Notice Sneak Peek
TUDUM kicked off with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson hyping up Red Notice, touted as Netflix's biggest original movie ever. Johnson kept the preamble brief and introduced an action-packed clip containing Red Notice's star trio of himself, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds. An extended version of the museum action sequence already glimpsed in the Red Notice trailer from earlier this month, the clip shows Johnson's Agent Hartley and Reynolds' Nolan Booth failing spectacularly to arrest Gadot's Sarah Black, who has her sights set on a valuable Fabergé egg.
The footage demonstrates Red Notice's action, humor, and the dynamic between leads, while also offering more about the plot than the aforementioned trailer. Black is hunting 3 mysterious eggs, with 2 already in her possession, so Hartley teams up with Nolan, another master thief, to put the bigger fish in jail. Red Notice is scheduled to stream November 12.
The Harder They Fall
Classic westerns all but whitewashed the cowboy era of American history, but Netflix's The Harder They Fall is redressing the balance. Starring Jonathan Majors (Lovecraft Country, Loki), Idris Elba (The Suicide Squad, Luther) and Regina King (Watchmen, If Beale Street Could Talk) alongside the likes of Zazie Beetz, Lakeith Stanfield and Delroy Lindo, The Harder They Fall shines a spotlight on real Black figures from the wild west period, including Nat Love and Stagecoach Mary. An idea ten years in the making, Jeymes Samuel directs and writes, with Jay-Z producing.
TUDUM gives fans a first glimpse of The Harder They Fall's modern western aesthetic - the cinematic action, unique design and innovative soundtrack - before the scheduled premiere on November 3.
Jeen-Yuhs - Kanye West Documentary
Celebrating Netflix's music documentaries with "Sing Me A Story" by D Smoke, Netflix's TUDUM announced the title of its upcoming Kanye West documentary, Jeen-Yuhs. A sneak-peak clip shows archive footage from New York in 2002, where a young, pre-fame Kanye astounds his contemporaries with sublime vocal skills, staking his claim for future musical greatness.
Through My Window Premiere Date
TUDUM introduces A Través De Mi Ventana (Through My Window) author Ariana Godoy to offer some early details of Netflix's movie adaptation. Godoy interviews the actors who'll be portraying her literary creations - Julio Peña as Ares, Clara Galle as Raquel, Eric Masip as Artemis, Guillermo Lasheras as Yoshi, Natalia Azahara as Daniela, Hugo Arubes as Apolo, and Emilia Lazo as Claudia. A short teaser reveals the premiere date as Feb 4, 2022.
Khufiya First Look
During TUDUM's "India Spotlight" segment, Radhika Apte announced a brand new movie project from Vishal Bharadwaj - a spy-thriller called Khufiya. Set in 2004 and based around India's External Intelligence Service, Khufiya is an adaptation of Amar Bhushan's Escape To Nowhere. Starring Tabu and Ali Fazal, Khufiya's plot involves government whistle-blowers and the occupation of Kashmir. The enigmatic footage combines a noir-ish office with covert CCTV feeds.
Extraction 2 Teaser
Starring Chris Hemsworth as a mercenary with a death wish, Extraction became one of Netflix's biggest original movies of last year, and a sequel was quickly announced. Hemsworth himself joined the TUDUM festivities to hit play on the first Extraction 2 teaser, which recaps the ending of the original film before showing Tyler Rake, Extraction's action hero lead, emerging from the river he supposedly drowned in. Alongside the hashtag #RakeLives, Hemsworth confirmed filming will begin shortly with the original team of Sam Hargrave and the Russo brothers returning for the follow-up.
Halle Berry's Bruised Behind-The-Scenes Look
Streaming from November 24, a TUDUM featurette builds hype for Bruised, the MMA movie directed by and starring Halle Berry. The Die Another Day and Catwoman actress spoke of the challenges she faced making her behind-the-camera debut, and described Bruised as a new take on the fight genre, focusing on a woman of color as she balances her octagon career with motherhood.
K-Spotlight: Love & Leashes
Though TUDUM's Korean portion was dominated by TV content, fans got their first still from the upcoming Love & Leashes, based on the Moral Sense webtoon (a.k.a. The Sensual M). It's 50 Shades of K, as the image shows starring duo Seohyun and Lee Jun Young (of U-KISS fame) as lovers with certain preferences behind closed doors.
Murder Mystery 2 Confirmed
After Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler starred as a married couple whose long-awaited trip to Europe ended in mystery and murder in 2019's Murder Mystery, a sequel was quickly put into development. Aniston and Sandler zoomed into TUDUM to confirm Murder Mystery 2 is underway, bringing a new logo with them for the occasion.
Army Of Thieves New Trailer
One of TUDUM's feature events was a panel and fresh trailer for Army of Thieves, the Army of the Dead spinoff. A prequel to Zack Snyder's zombie Vegas flick, star and director Matthias Schweighöfer introduces his cast - Nathalie Emmanuel's Gwendoline (group leader), Stuart Martin's Brad (muscle), Ruby O. Fee's Korina (hacker) and Guz Khan's Rolph (driver). Wesley Coller (producer) confirms Army of Thieves as a romantic-comedy heist with only a light sprinkling of zombies, and Schweighöfer reveals the main cast members were made to improvise certain scenes. Deborah Snyder also explains how the legendary Hans Zimmer came to be Army of Thieves' composer. Zimmer apparently identified with the German roots running throughout Snyder's spin-off and asked to be involved - a request Schweighöfer was only too happy to accept.
Army of Thieves' TUDUM trailer incorporates plenty of new footage - Deiter winning an underground safe-cracking competition (thus attracting the attentions of Gwendoline), and a bank vault fight sequence that Zack Snyder describes as one of the film's most impressive moments. The trailer also draws a curious connection between Army of Thieves and Army of the Dead, revealing how Gwendoline's team are planning to hit a trio of safes all belonging to Bly Tanaka - Hiroyuki Sanada's casino owner from the original film.
Don't Look Up First Look
A Don't Look Up panel with Adam McKay and Jennifer Lawrence teases Netflix's upcoming comedy disaster movie co-starring Meryl Streep and Leonardo DiCaprio. A new clip depicts Lawrence's Dr. Dibiasky and DiCaprio's Dr. Mindy attempting to convince Streep's President Orlean that a comet is due to trigger the apocalypse with 100% (well, 99.78) certainty. Streep and her Chief-of-Staff son (played by Jonah Hill) farcically attempt denying their impending doom for the sake of metrics and population polls, in a clear take-down of recent political administrations. Don't Look Up crashes onto Netflix December 10.
Enola Holmes 2 Begins Filming
TUDUM wisely ends with a double-dose of Henry Cavill, and the DCEU Superman actor joins Stranger Things' Millie Bobby Brown to give fans a taste of what to expect from Enola Holmes 2. The duo confirm that filming on the sequel to 2020's Netflix spy hit begins imminently. Louis Partridge also reveals that Tewkesbury will finally get screen time with Cavill's Sherlock when the Netflix sequel finally lands.
