Labor Day takes place on the first Monday of every September, and gives workers a well-earned day off. The federal holiday has been celebrated for more than 125 years and highlights the hard graft of workers from all walks of life.
Given many have a day off on September 6, it would make sense to also enjoy some leisure activities with those closest to us, like seeing the latest blockbuster at the movie theater.
However, with many stores closed due to the celebrations, movie fans will have to make sure their local multiplex is open and still showing films.
Luckily, most movie theaters are open on Labor Day, and given the new releases coming out they will likely be busy places.
What Movies Are Out Now in Movie Theaters?
Given the last 18 months has seen movie theaters closed at various points due to the coronavirus pandemic, many great movies which have previously been delayed are starting to hit the big screen.
One such movie is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings, the latest Marvel movie.
The film follows Shang-Chi (played by Simu Liu) who left his past to start a new life in San Francisco, only to find it and the 10 Rings Organization has caught up with him after many years.
Currently this film is top of the box office chart, followed by new Jordan Peele-produced movie Candyman.
Candyman is a direct sequel to the 1992 movie of the same name, and takes a fresh look at the horror franchise.
The movie follow Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), an artist whose investigations about the urban legend of Candyman lead him to uncover truths about his own past.
While the past has been the focus of the top two box office movies, the third in the rankings is very much about the present: Free Guy.
Guy (Ryan Reynolds) is a non-player character in a video game, Free City, where everything bad seems to happen to those he knows.
But when he unlocks the truth about the world he lives in, he realizes he is the only one who can save it.
The fourth and fifth top movies at the moment are more suitable for the whole family, and are both perfect to bring the children to.
The first is Paw Patrol: The Movie, the movie adaptation of the famous animated TV series for kids.
This time, with big names like Kim Kardashian, Tyler Perry and Jimmy Kimmel in the voice cast, the story follows Ryder and his team of puppies get in gear when their rival Humdinger starts terrorizing Adventure City.
Finally, Jungle Cruise is the fifth of the top five movies out now, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt as adventurers.
The movie is based on the Disney theme park ride of the same name, and follows them as they try to find the Tree of Life hidden along the Amazon river.
Jungle Cruise has already had its sequel green lit, meaning those wanting to catch up on the movie many are raving about can do so this Labor Day holiday.
Check your local movie theater for opening information and what movies are on near you.
