LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- Long before Lakewood High School sophomore Brandon Erway was allowed to see a Quentin Tarantino film, the Academy Award-winner was already his favorite director.

It makes sense that this movie fan would parlay his love of Hollywood into becoming a burgeoning filmmaker, who spent the better part of the pandemic casting and shooting his family in his recently finished short film “Soldier of Revenge.”

“It’s a 25-minute movie about this ex-marine, who is a CIA agent,” said Erway, 15. “He wants to find out who killed his wife.

“I originally wanted it to come out in December, because I wanted to make an action Christmas movie like ‘Die Hard,’ but I couldn’t edit it in time. So we started shooting more and more. I had a script, but I didn’t really like it, so I was rewriting it as we shot.”

Due to the pandemic, the shooting was limited to family homes, which is where he recently returned for social distance-friendly screenings. At this time, he’s unsure if “Soldier of Revenge” will be put online.

“The feedback has been good, my family all seemed to like it,” said Erway, who was proud of the film’s gritty feel.

The screenwriter, director and editor, who previously attended a Lakewood Young Filmmakers Academy camp, didn’t intend for “Soldier of Revenge” to be a PG-13 affair.

“I really like Tarantino and Scorsese’s work,” said Erway, whose favorite movies are “Chinatown” and “Drive.”

“I’m like, they don’t clean their movies up, so I don’t want to clean mine up. There’s a lot of blood.”

Erway’s mother, Julie Hogan, said her son has always been interested in films. Not only did he ask for costumes and props for birthday and Christmas gifts over the years, but he’s also quite knowledgeable when it comes to movie trivia.

“Brandon has loved mostly action and adventure movies since he was pretty young,” Hogan said. “He’s been interested in making films forever. At about the age of 10, Brandon started making little movies with his brother, dad and other family members.

“His big interest is Tarantino and Scorsese films. He was interested in those long before we let him watch them.”

While Erway may submit “Soldier of Revenge” to film festivals, he’s already thinking ahead to his next project.

“It’ll be another short about a dirty cop trying to solve murders,” Erway said. “So far I have eight pages. I just want to make a really good action movie. That’s hard to do.”

The teenager knows time is on his side. Erway eventually wants to attend film school. He’s also not ruling out a move one day to Hollywood.

“He’s definitely going to work in film,” Hogan said. “He loves writing scripts and directing. He feels a lot of confidence and real energy moving forward. I love it. He’s so passionate about it. We really want to support him any way we can.”
