Although metro Detroit's movie theaters are still waiting for an OK from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to re-open, a new Marvel movie will open here on at least one outdoor screen.
Emagine Novi announced Tuesday tickets are on sale for showings of "The New Mutants" at its temporary drive-in location at its Fountain Walk site.
The film opens this weekend, with screenings starting Thursday night.
Based on the Marvel comic series, the horror thriller stars a young cast (including Maisie Williams from HBO's "Game of Thrones") as five mutants coming to terms with their special powers.
“The New Mutants” will arrive at both indoor and outdoor screens across the country. It's among the first new releases since mid-March as theaters try to find a new normal for film-going during the coronavirus pandemic.
The most anticipated movie of the COVID-19 summer, "Tenet," is taking a different approach. It will only play at drive-ins if indoor movie theaters in a certain region are closed for public health reasons, according to Variety.
"Tenet," written and directed by Christopher Nolan and starring John David Washington and Robert Pattinson, is set to arrive Sept. 3.
Indoor movie theaters in metro Detroit and much of Michigan's Lower Peninsula remained closed by Gov. Whitmer's orders to curb the spread of COVID-19. So do theaters in large urban centers like New York City and Los Angeles.

Last week, Whitmer said she is working with state health officials and hinted she may have updates soon for businesses like movie theaters and gyms that remain shut down.
Emagine Novi's drive-in has a limited capacity of 175 vehicles of vehicles and maintains social distancing between them. Tickets are on sale now at the Emagine website.
