Harkins Theatres is reopening — but not in the Phoenix area.
At least not yet.
Arizona’s largest movie theater chain will open locations in Flagstaff, Prescott Valley and Sedona on Friday, Aug. 28, “with hopefully more Arizona theatres announced very soon,” according to a release.
Harkins will also open one theater each in Colorado, Texas and Oklahoma. Theaters in Phoenix and Tucson will have to wait until the COVID-19 numbers align with the state’s requirements for reopening, said Mike Bowers, the president and CEO of Harkins Theatres.
No California theaters will open yet, either.
“There is no question that this has been the most difficult time in my 50 plus years in the business,” Dan Harkins, the chain’s owner, said in a release. “I am so excited and so appreciative of our incredible team and tremendously loyal guests that have continued to support us through this challenging time.”
These are Harkins' COVID-19 safety measures
Face coverings will be required, except when eating and drinking once you’re seated. Masks will be available for purchase at theaters. Social distancing will also be required.
All seating will be reserved. Harkins employees will undergo daily health checks. Audience capacity will be limited, though percentages will vary by location, depending on the size of the auditorium. Other safety protocols are listed on the Harkins website, which also announces specials and opening dates for films.
Harkins’ announcement continues the on-again, off-again pattern of openings and closures due to the pandemic. AMC, the country’s largest movie theater chain, previously announced plans to open Aug. 21, but can’t in the Phoenix area.
Gov. Doug Ducey closed movie theaters on March 20, as cases began to rise. He lifted the state’s stay-at-home order on May 15, but few theaters reopened, citing safety concerns over COVID-19.
On Aug. 10 the state issued a complex set of guidelines for reopening in which officials consider the number of cases per 100,000 people, the percentage of positive test results and the percentage of hospital visits due to COVID-like illness.
