Syracuse, N.Y. — An Emmy-winning producer and actor who filmed a movie in Syracuse last year is dead at age 35.

Variety reports filmmaker Ash Christian died in his sleep Thursday while vacationing in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. No other details have been released.

The Texas native had more than 30 acting credits, appearing in TV shows like “Boston Public,” “Ugly Betty,” “Law & Order,” “The Good Wife” and “The Good Fight.” He wrote, directed and starred in his first feature film, “Fat Girls,” in 2006 when he was just 19 years old, and won a Daytime Emmy Award in 2014 for outstanding special-class short-format daytime program for “mI Promise.”

Christian also had more than 30 producing credits and founded the production company Cranium Entertainment, which released the 2016 film “Hurricane Bianca” and the 2018 SXSW hit “1985.” Deadline reports his upcoming films include “Chick Fight” (starring Alec Baldwin, Malin Akerman and Bella Thorne); “As Sick As They Made Us” (Mayim Bialik’s directorial debut starring Dustin Hoffman and Candice Bergen); and “Nightfall” starring Matt Bomer and Sam Worthington.

Christian was in Syracuse last year as a producer for “Paper Spiders,” which filmed around Central New York in 2019 with scenes at the Greater Syracuse Soundstage (formerly known as the film hub in DeWitt), the B’ville Diner, the Red Mill Inn, a Thrifty Shopper store, and two bars in Armory Square, Al’s Wine & Whiskey Lounge and the Syracuse Suds Factory. Christian also served as a keynote speaker at the CNY Film Conference in June 2019.

“We are absolutely heartbroken to share the terrible news - our dear friend and wonderful producer Ash Christian passed away this morning,” director Inon Shampanier wrote on the official Facebook page for “Paper Spiders” Saturday. “Ash was a kind soul with a big heart, who helped and touched so many people. We are so sad to break the news this way but know that many of you in this group have had the pleasure of working with him on the movie and loved him. We will miss Ash so much.”

“Ash was a great friend, colleague and partner in crime,” Christian’s “Paper Spiders” producing partner Anne Clements said in a statement. “He was a champion of indie film and filmmakers and his love of the process of putting movies together was infectious. My heart goes out to his family, especially his mother. The world lost one of the good ones.”

“Paper Spiders” is set to premiere Aug. 27 at the Dances with Films Festival, an independent film festival in Los Angeles taking place virtually this year due to the coronavirus.

A nationwide release date has not been announced for “Paper Spiders,” described as a bittersweet coming-of-age story about a high school student’s senior year being turned upside down when her mother begins to suffer from a mental illness. The cast includes Lili Taylor (“Say Anything,” “Mystic Pizza”), Stefania LaVie Owen (“The Carrie Diaries”), Max Casella (“The Sopranos”), Peyton List (“Jessie,” “Bunk’d”), Ian Nelson (“The Hunger Games”) and comedian Tom Papa. Inon Shampanier directs on a script he co-wrote with Natalie Shampanier.

Eric Vinal, vice president of film, TV and entertainment for Visit Syracuse, said he had spoken with Christian days before his death about a new project he wanted to bring to Syracuse.

“Amazing guy and a great friend,” Vinal said. “He really believed in film in Central New York and loved being in town. We’re going to miss him.”
