Drive-in movie theaters have been hot in 2020, as families looking for entertainment options during the COVID-19 pandemic have increasingly turned to these social-distancing-friendly venues.
Not only do we have the usual suspects — the West Wind locations that have been running for years — but now there many other “pop-up” locations opening around town.
Here’s a roundup of some of the drive-in movie locations in the Bay Area and surrounding areas:
Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk — Movies shown at Boardwalk’s River Parking Lot (corner of Beach and Third Street) Fri-Sat, Aug. 21-Sept. 26, beachboardwalk.com/Drive-In-Movies. (Read full story here.)
Fremont’s Car Cinema — Movies shown at Central Park softball field parking lot (1110 Stevenson Blvd.). $35 per car (pre-sale only, none sold at gate), fremont.gov/movienights. Next movie (“Jumanji”) scheduled 7 p.m. Aug. 14. (Read full story here.)
Sunset Cinema Drive-In — Movies set for Aug. 14, 21 and 23 at Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga. Tickets are $25, montalvoarts.org/programs/sunset_cinema. (Read full story here.)
Alameda County Fairgrounds — Movies scheduled for Aug. 14, 15, 21 and 22 at the fairgrounds in Pleasanton. Tickets are $35, alamedacountyfair.com/movie-drive-ins. (Read full story here.)
West Wind Drive-in theaters — Movies running nightly at the company’s three Northern California locations — Capitol Drive-In in San Jose, Solano Drive-In in Concord and Sacramento Drive-In, westwinddi.com.
