Finding new ways to entertain the public during Covid-19

WELLSVILLE — Start popping the popcorn, get out your blankets and lawn chairs and get ready to attend the movies.

At 8:30 p.m. Thursday the David A. Howe Public Library in Wellsville will turn its front lawn into an open air movie theater when it shows the new movie "Sonic the Hedgehog" free of charge for whomever wants to enjoy a movie on a "big" screen.

"During this time, we’re trying to find new ways for people to use the library. Our outdoor story times on Fridays have been working well and we thought this movie would be fun for everyone," said Nic Gunning, library director.

The movie will be held on the front lawn facing the roadway and all requirements of meeting in large groups will be followed. Lines will be placed on the lawn indicating where people can sit. Masks and social distancing will be required. Attendees are allowed to bring snacks and drinks, but just like in parks, they are expected to take their litter with them. There will be no access to the library for restrooms. The movie is free of charge, but donations to the library are always welcome, Gunning said.

If movie night is successful, organizers hope to be able to show more movies throughout the summer.

Gunning explained, "Each year we pay for a special license to be able to show movies. We hope to do more."

The library will be using a screen and projector that has been used in the Teen Loft.

Currently as part of New York state’s reopening plan, movie theaters are still closed. Outdoor theaters in Perry and Portville have been open on a limited basis showing old movies sometimes coupled with concert performances.

The DAH will be showing a new movie, released in February of this year, "Sonic the Hedgehog." This movie is based on the popular video game.

The movie is described as, "The world needed a hero – it got a hedgehog. Powered with incredible speed Sonic races across the globe to stop the uncool evil genius Dr. Robonik." World renowned comedian Jim Carrey plays the evil genius.

The original movie was released this year in the United States but later fell victim to the coronavirus when movie theaters and other venues accommodating crowds were closed down to limit exposure to the virus. However, the weekend "Sonic the Hedgehog" opened in the United States, it set the record for the biggest opening weekend for a film based on a video game. Earning over $306 million, it was praised by movie critics.

Gunning and company believe that the movie will be entertaining for children of all ages and encourages the public to attend.

Since June 29, the DAH has been open for limited use. Materials can be ordered online or by calling the library at 585-610-3410 and picked up between noon to 2 p.m. or between 4 and 6 p.m. at the doors of the Nancy Howe Auditorium.

"We’re finding new ways for people to use the library," Gunning said, "Circumstances aren’t ideal, but people are responding. With the movie night we are taking advantage of the front yard the way we’ve been doing with our outdoor story time on Fridays. We’re hoping that the public will respond, and we can do more."
