CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cinemark will not reopen movie theaters Friday as planned.
“The company continues to evaluate availability of new studio content, status of the virus and local government regulations as it plans for the phased reopening of its U.S. theatres,” a representative for the No. 3 movie chain in the country said in an email. “All locations will reopen with greatly enhanced cleanliness, sanitizing and safety measures at every step of the moviegoing experience.”
Cinemark’s theaters in Valley View, Strongsville, Macedonia, and Cuyahoga Falls have closed since March 17. The chain’s Aurora location closed permenantly in June.
This is the second time Cinemark has delayed reopening its theaters. The move follows the decision by Warner Bros. to postpone the release of Christopher Nolan’s spy thriller “Tenet” indefinitely. The movie, which was supposed to be Hollywood’s big test to see if moviegoers would return to theaters amid the coronavirus pandemic, was set to premiere August 12.
“We will share a new 2020 release date imminently for ‘Tenet,’ Christopher Nolan’s wholly original and mind-blowing feature,” said Warner Bros. chairman Toby Emmerich in a statement Monday. “Our goals throughout this process have been to ensure the highest odds of success for our films while also being ready to support our theater partners with new content as soon as they could safely reopen.”
The move leaves Disney’s live-action “Mulan” in the driver’s seat as potentially the first major Hollywood film to hit theaters since the shutdown started. The movie, starring Liu Yifei, is scheduled to be released on August 21.
The two other big movie theater chains, AMC and Regal, haven’t announced any changes to their reopening dates. As of right now, AMC is scheduled to welcome moviegoers back on July 30. Regal expects to reopen its doors July 31.
