OAKLAND — Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday ordered 19 California counties with high coronavirus rates to close indoor dining, movie theaters and other venues as the virus surges around California.
Counties that the state has flagged for worrisome indicators like hospitalization rates will also need to shutter zoos, entertainment centers, museums, wineries and cardrooms for the next three weeks, Newsom said Thursday. The directive applies to 19 counties that together contain nearly three-quarters of California's population.

Newsom also announced the state on Wednesday launched a new enforcement strike team to address businesses and areas that aren't following rules. The team will include California Highway Patrol and regulators such as state Alcoholic Beverage Control and Division of Occupational Safety and Health.
California has seen a surge in new infections and hospitalizations over the past two weeks after the state reopened dozens of sectors in May and June. The state now has a record 5,196 Covid-19 patients in hospitals, a 51 percent increase over the past two weeks. Still, Newsom stressed that California has the capacity to handle many more patients, saying that those patients are filling only 7 percent of all hospital beds in the state.
The new action builds on recent efforts to contain the virus’ spread, including a statewide mask requirement and ordering seven counties on Sunday to shutter bars. Newsom on Wednesday extended his bar closure order to all 19 counties on the state watch list.
The order will affect most of Southern California, including Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties, as well as a broad swath of the Central Valley. In the Bay Area, Contra Costa and Santa Clara counties will also have to adhere to the new order.
With public health officials warning that the looming Fourth of July weekend could accelerate infections, Newsom said he was directing the closure of parking lots near beaches around the state. The governor also urged all 19 counties to cancel fireworks shows if they haven't already and told residents to avoid gathering with people not in their household.
