The San Mateo County Event Center is the latest Bay Area venue to pivot its summer offerings in response to the pandemic, which led to the cancellation of its annual fair that would have taken place this week.

Now, the venue is repurposing what would have been an empty parking lot into a drive-in movie theater starting this Friday. Charged per vehicle, tickets cost $35 and will grant moviegoers with free admission to next year’s fair, similar to the Alameda County Fairgrounds, which also began screening drive-in movies in lieu of its fair earlier this month.

The series will kick off with two comedies released in 2004: “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story,” on June 19, and “Napoleon Dynamite” on June 20. The 1996 sci-fi film “Independence Day” will be shown on Friday, June 26. A portion of proceeds from ticket sales will go toward the San Mateo Strong fund, which provides emergency aid to small businesses, families and individuals impacted by the economic shutdown.

Gates open at 7:30 p.m. and each movie starts at 9 p.m. County fair-friendly concessions will include funnel cakes, cotton candy, corn dogs, and deep fried Oreos. Cocktails and other beverages will also be available for purchase from 5-8 p.m.

California movie theaters were given the go-ahead to reopen as early as June 12 as the state moves into Stage 3 of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s plan. Many remain shuttered, however, as the reduced 25% capacity allotted for theaters would not be enough for them to stay afloat. Moviegoers, too, remain apprehensive about their return.

But in the meantime, drive-in movie theaters are enjoying a resurgence. The West Wind Solano Drive-In locations in Concord, San Jose and Sacramento also recently reopened following a brief hiatus due to curfew restrictions. This weekend, the Concord location will show double features of “300” and “300: Rise of an Empire” as well as “Star Trek” and “Star Trek into Darkness.” View more showtimes here.
