A set video from the production of Batgirl reveals the first glimpse of Brendan Fraser as the film's villain while the crew celebrates his birthday. Batgirl is being directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah with a screenplay by Christina Hodson, who is an old hand at DCEU projects, having written Birds of Prey and 2022's The Flash, which is also in production. The film will be released exclusively on HBO Max at an unspecified date, though it will likely be sometime in 2023.
In the film, Brendan Fraser is set to play the notorious DC villain Firefly. Firefly is a master thief who, depending on the timeline, either uses his technical wizardry at lighting effects to get away with his crimes or is a rampant pyromaniac. Leslie Grace will take on the titular role of Barbara Gordon and none other than JK Simmons himself will also be returning after his turn as her father Commissioner Gordon in Justice League, with his scenes set to begin filming in Scotland in January 2022.
Yesterday was simultaneously Brendan Fraser's first day on set and his 53rd birthday. Today on his Instagram, co-director Adil El Arbi shared a photo and video from their on-set celebration. It's a simple costume of a button-down, long-sleeve henley covered by a thick, probably flame-retardant apron. It is likely a costume he wears when not fully suited up, but it is somewhat reminiscent of Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, if a slightly more presentable version. This film will be the first big popcorn blockbuster in quite some time for Brendan Fraser. Although he began his career by starring in adventure films like The Mummy and big-budget comedies like George of the Jungle, he hasn't been in a major franchise tentpole film since an uncredited appearance in 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. However, Batgirl isn't Brendan Fraser's first outing with DC Comics. He has previously appeared as a major character on the HBO Max series Doom Patrol, in which he voices Robotman.
This video shows what a gracious and personable star Brendan Fraser is. The comedic actor doesn't usually portray villains, so this is certainly an exciting development for him. Hopefully, his turn in Batgirl will show off his range and allow him to play even more exciting roles in big projects in the years to come.
