Andrew Bennett, a 10-year-old from Springfield, is making his dreams come true, starring in the upcoming family comedy, “The Junkyard Dogs.”
The film is about a dog named Houdini who is a master escape artist, according to IMDb, and teams up with other puppies to stop their neighborhood from being robbed. Bennett plays Dominic Sullivan, who helps the puppies stop some bumbling thieves, Deadline reported, while well-renowned actress, Denise Richards, plays his mother.
“It’s a very good family story. It’s a comedy, which I’m very excited for the laughs because I’m kind of a funny guy myself sometimes,” Bennett told MassLive.
Bennett, a fourth-grader at Frederick Harris School, has been acting for about two and a half years.
“This was actually my first movie, which was actually pretty mind-blowing,” Bennet said. In the past, he’s done commercials as well as live performances and says he just loves to entertain people.
Bennett has many fond memories of filming the movie, especially noting the puppies.
“All the dogs were very well trained. It was amazing,” Bennett said, recalling times he got to play with them on his lunch break and how they would jump off the trainer’s back to catch frisbees.
“My favorite moments of filming was probably meeting all the people because everyone on set was so nice,” Bennet said. “I’d love to make do another one, it was awesome. I loved it.”
But of course, as a fourth-grader, he had to balance school with filming. Once he landed the role, Bennett’s parents let the principal know when he would be out. Bennett ended up missing four days but was easily kept up on his schoolwork, as the children were required to complete two to three hours of schoolwork every day on set.
His father, Jeff Bennett, thanked the school for allowing him the opportunity.
The company Verdi Productions, filmed in Connecticut, he added, which made it convenient for the Bennett’s as they could travel back and forth from Western Massachusetts.
ln fact, Bennett’s parents have been a strong support system for their son along the way, posting their excitement to Facebook throughout filming.
When Andrew got the role, his mother, Carly Bennett posted, “It’s seems as though Madelyn and I have been replaced,” joking about how her son was cast a mother and a sister in the film.
“It is absolutely surreal and overwhelming to me that Andrew will be on set doing his thing with actual celebrities in a few short weeks… I have no doubt in my mind that this will be the first of many major projects for this guy!!” she added.
Jeff Bennett noted how great Denise Richards and Patrick Muldoon, another actor in the movie, were with the kids.
As filming wrapped up on Saturday, Carly Bennett posted a photo to Facebook of Andrew hugging the director, Jacob Cooney, with tears in his eyes.
“If this photo doesn’t show how passionate Andrew is about what he does, than I don’t know what will,” she wrote. “Thank you Jacob Cooney for believing in Andrew and allowing him to work on this project with you, as you can see he loved every moment and never wanted it to end!”
But this is far from the end for Andrew Bennett, as he has already started new projects. He will star as Olaf in St. Micheal Community Theater’s upcoming show, “Frozen.” He also had an audition on Wednesday to do voiceover work for Nickelodeon.
And Bennett is committed to his dream. He is signed with DDO Kids, a talent agency out of New York and Los Angeles, works with JC Models and Actors of Connecticut and takes vocal lessons and acting classes. You may even spot him singing the National Anthem at the Wilbraham Falcons football game this weekend.
“The Junkyard Dogs” is slated to be released in mid-2022.
