The Boyle County Public Library hosts in-person and hybrid events plus take-and-make activities for a variety of ages. These events provide numerous ways for patrons to get involved and experience all the library has to offer. This fall, the library is hosting Dinosaur Discovery, an exhibit featuring over 120 fossils and castings from Dr. John Hankla’s curated collection. In addition to the exhibit, library patrons can also enjoy interactive activities including a weekly Teen 3D Printing Series, Preschool Storytime, gaming events, and book clubs. Here is a closer look at some of the upcoming activities at the library.
Candy Catapults
Youth are invited to use STEM skills to build mini catapults and launch marshmallows, candy corn and candy pumpkins. Kits containing all the supplies needed to do the activity at home will be available starting Friday, Oct. 15 while supplies last. Join us in-person to make the catapult and launch candy that afternoon between 4-5:30 p.m. The in-person session will be held in the library park. Masks are encouraged. (Ages 9-18)
Teen D&D
On Saturday, Oct. 16 from 2-4 p.m., teens are invited to play what some call the greatest role-playing game of all time. At this in-person event, teens can venture through campaigns that will test their ability to work together and conquer foes in this tabletop adventure. Registration is required to play. Ghost Hunting: A Night in the Life
On Saturday, Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m., local paranormal investigative team, 859 Paranormal Research, will give a presentation on what they do, how and why they do it, as well as a demonstration of their equipment and stories from past investigations in our area. This event will be held in the community room. Face masks required. (Ages 18+)
Kids Crafts & More
On Tuesday, Oct. 19, the library will offer Halloween-themed Crafts & More kits for kids to complete from home while following along to a video of Ms. Libby on the library’s YouTube channel. Kits can be picked up starting Oct. 19 while supplies last. Each bag will have a craft, snack and STEM project. Kits are also available via curbside pickup. Call the library at 859-238-7323 starting the day the kits are available to ask for a kit using curbside pickup, and it will be set out in the rotunda for you.
Crafting for Keeps
At this program series you will be guided through the process of making a craft that you get to keep. On Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. we will be making Book Pumpkins, a fun and lovely piece of fall décor for your home or office. This event will be held in the community room. Masks are required. Extra supplies will be made into kits that will be available in the library lobby while supplies last. (Ages 18+)
Starlight Movie Night
On Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m., all ages are invited to watch a movie outside under the stars at the library. Bring lawn chairs, blankets, and snacks to settle in to watch a movie perfect for the whole family. The movie starts at dusk with an expected runtime of 90 minutes. Social distancing and masks are encouraged for outdoor programs.
About the movie: In this 2021 animated Disney film, in a re-imagined Earth inhabited by an ancient civilization, a warrior is determined to find the last dragon. Rated PG. (Due to licensing restrictions, the use of the film title is prohibited here). Additional information about the film can be found in the event listing on the library’s website BoylePubLib.org. Third Thursday AM Book Club
The Third Thursday AM Book Club continues in-person this month. In October the club will be reading Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. The book discussion will be held in the community room on Thursday, Oct. 21 at 10:30 a.m. Masks are required. (Ages 18+)
Magic: The Gathering
On Thursday, Oct. 21 from 4 to 7 p.m., the library will host a Magic: The Gathering (MTG) event. MTG is a fun, fast-paced strategy card game from Wizards of the Coast. This event will be held in the community room at the library. Masks are required. (Ages 13+)
Chess in the Park
On Saturday, Oct. 23 from 2-4 p.m., visit the library for a relaxing day of a classic strategy game outdoors. This event will be held in the library park. Masks are encouraged. (All ages)
