TEXARKANA, Texas — Elvis is in the house this Friday night when the Texarkana Museums System shows "Blue Hawaii" on the Ace of Clubs House lawn.
It's the kickoff screening of the TMS Moonlight and Movies series for Fridays in August. This showing of a beachy keen classic includes an El Frio Express discount on their Blue Hawaiian drink, plus an Elvis impersonator performing for the audience.
"We are going to be doing four movies in August. They're each going to be on Friday. We will open the gates at 7:30 p.m.," said TMS President Velvet Cool. "Each event is going to have some pre-movie entertainment. For example, we're going to be working with Stephen Yarberry, a local Elvis impersonator."
As well, the Museums System will end the movie series with a pearl bracelet and earring giveaway. Raffle tickets for that drawing are given to all movie attendees.
"You'll also have chances to win extra raffle tickets by things like our trivia that we'll do online — social media — we usually do it on Facebook," Cool said. For the Elvis film this week, wearing a Hawaiian shirt gives you an extra raffle chance.
The movie events are BYOB, and that includes the aforementioned Blue Hawaiian beverage from El Frio Express, which is just a couple of blocks away from the Ace of Clubs House.
As to the movie lineup for August, Cool said they'll showcase an eclectic group of movies on successive Fridays.
"We decided to do 'Blue Hawaii' because we have not shown an Elvis movie yet. The next one is 'Operation Petticoat,'" Cool said. That latter flick is a Blake Edwards-directed war comedy classic starring Cary Grant and Tony Curtis.
"The third one, and I think this is probably going to be my favorite, is 'To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar,' a fabulous sort of cult classic with Patrick Swayze, John Leguizamo and Wesley Snipes," Cool said, noting the movie has valuable moral lessons to teach.
"It's very much about equality for all," Cool said.
To round out the month, the final Friday night movie at the Ace of Clubs is the James Bond classic "Goldfinger," which they'll show because this is the golden anniversary for the Texarkana Museums System, the TMS president said.
They hope the weather this Friday night isn't as miserably hot as it has been lately.
"We remind everybody that out there on the lawn with the trees and the nighttime, it's generally very, very comfortable," Cool said.
The TMS will see how August goes and then see if they can continue the movies in the upcoming months, she said, recommending that people bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit on. They'll work on creative reserved seating for people who don't want to bring their own seats.
Movies will start around sundown. Attendees can get tickets in advance or at the event. Concessions with food and drink will be sold.
"We have a whole new movie committee, and they've been working really hard," Cool said.
(Admission: $5 or free for Texarkana Museums System members; a VIP reserved "beach" seating is $20 for two for non-members. The Ace of Clubs is located at 420 Pine St. in downtown Texarkana. Get advance tickets at Texarkanamuseums.org/events. More info: 903-793-4831.)
