Faye Dunaway Joins Kevin Spacey in That Movie You're Not Dying to See - Vanity Fair

She’ll play what was originally Vanessa Redgrave's role in a film about a man wrongfully accused of sexually abusing children.

Not since mistakenly declaring La La Land best picture at the 2017 Oscars has Faye Dunaway positioned herself for such controversy. On Wednesday, Variety reported that Dunaway will appear alongside Kevin Spacey in his first film since being accused multiple times of sexual misconduct. The Italian film L’uomo Che Disegno Dio, or The Man Who Drew God, stars and is directed by Franco Nero

Spacey, who has repeatedly denied allegations of sexual misconduct, will reportedly portray a police investigator in the movie, which, according to The Guardian, is about a blind man (played by Nero) who is wrongfully accused of sexually abusing children. Vanessa Redgrave, Nero’s wife, was originally slated to appear in Dunaway’s role, producer Louis Nero confirmed to Variety. “She plays an old Breille teacher who is an old friend of the blind protagonist played by Nero and taught him how to read,” he told the outlet. “It’s the role that Vanessa Redgrave was meant to have. Vanessa isn’t up to traveling anymore.” But shortly after news of Spacey’s controversial return to movies broke, Redgrave’s team released a statement saying “she will not appear in the film.”

Dunaway and Spacey have a decades-long history with one another. He cast the Oscar winner in his 1996 directorial debut, Albino Alligator. Twenty years later, the pair reunited at the 2016 amfAR Gala in Cannes, where Spacey made jokes about now-convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein and Donald Trump, who has denied dozens of sexual misconduct allegations against him. Dunaway was hit with her own abuse lawsuit in 2019 when Michael Rocha, her former assistant, alleged that she “regularly and relentlessly subjected plaintiff to abusive demeaning tirades” that included referring to him as “a little homosexual boy.” (Dunaway’s lawyer couldn’t be reached for comment by Page Six at the time.)

The Man Who Drew God is being shopped around at this week’s Cannes Film Festival, the film’s producer told Variety. (Both Spacey and Dunaway are visible on a poster for the film at Cannes.) “We have plenty of interest from buyers around the world,” Louis Nero said. “All the controversy around the film has generated plenty of interest… It was good for the film, from my point of view.” He said that the movie is expected to bow by September.
