What was the most-watched Christmas movie to start Dec.? It wasn’t any of the classics, survey finds - pennlive.com

Some people like to stream holiday movies all year round. Some, for whatever reason, like to celebrate Christmas in July.

But for the majority of people, holiday movie-watching officially begins at the start of December, although some of the most popular holiday movies that people streamed to start off this season were a bit…unconventional.

New metrics gleaned by streaming service hub Reelgood took into account which holiday movies were played the most on Dec. 1 based upon streaming and viewership data from over 2 million consumers. While some movies are very clearly those that fit into the annual Christmas coterie, the holiday status of others are debatable.

For example, the second-most streamed movie on Dec. 1 was unsurprisingly “Elf,” which stars Will Ferrell as Buddy, a human raised by Santa’s elves that seeks to reconnect with his biological father.

Other popular movies watched on this day were “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” ”Home Alone,” and “Scrooged.”

The eighth most-streamed movie on this day, however, was “Die Hard.” No film controversy has existed with such fervor as the one surrounding the debate on whether or not the Bruce Willis-led action film can be called a Christmas movie.

Many such as Entertainment Weekly vote “yes”: not only does the film take place during Christmas, put is apparently “stuffed with more Xmas per frame than anything airing on Hallmark Channel…plus lots and lots of fighting, blood, guns and ammo, thus making it perhaps the most American of Christmas movies ever.”

Others simply say it has nothing to do with the holidays apart from its setting. The world moves on.

If you’re looking for the right holiday movie to stream next, check out the Reelgood “Holiday Roulette” feature—their recommendations won’t disappoint.

Or just save yourself some time and get to watching “The Muppet Christmas Carol” already.
