With many people having stayed close to home over the past several months because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ward 2 Councilwoman Deborah Delgado, Twin Forks Rising Community Development Corporation and the Hattiesburg Convention Commission are partnering together to provide a safe opportunity for families to get out and enjoy a free holiday-themed movie night.
Friday Holiday Drive-In Movie Night will be held twice before Christmas – once on Nov. 20 and again on Dec. 18 – across from the African American Military History Museum on East 6th Street in downtown Hattiesburg. The event will feature two family-friendly films that can be enjoyed from the safety of a vehicle or from socially distanced markers that will be provided.
“People have been on lockdown and quarantine, and many of them have made the choice to stay in, and it’s risky to kind of be out there,” Delgado said. “If we create some kind of family entertainment where they’re protected, then it can raise spirits, and it would allow a family to take a night to go to a drive-in.
“We don’t have drive-ins anymore, and they can have that experience and stay in a vehicle and just enjoy an evening out doing something different.”
The first movie will be “Johnson Family Vacation,” a 2004 comedy featuring Cedric the Entertainer, Vanessa Williams, Bow Wow, Gabby Soleil, Shannon Elizabeth and Steve Harvey. The movie, which will be shown at 7 p.m. Nov. 20, tells the story of a man who takes a cross-country trip to bond with his children.
The second film, “Black Nativity,” will be held at 7 p.m. Dec. 18. The film features Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett and Tyrese Gibson and is about a Baltimore teenager who travels to New York City to spend the Christmas holiday with estranged relatives.
Cartoons start before each feature at 6:30 p.m.
Families can either stay in their vehicles to watch the films or bring lawn chairs to enjoy them from socially distanced pods that will be marked on site.
“We’re going to enforce that – if they aren’t in their vehicle, then they would have to be in one of those spaces, and they would have to be wearing masks as well,” Delgado said. “But it’s going to be cool – it’s getting to be winter in Hattiesburg – so some of us will want to be in their vehicle with a blanket.”
A food truck will be on hand along with Southern Kernels, which will provide movie food such as popcorn, candy and hot dogs.
“We want a big turnout,” Delgado said. “This time, we are making it so that a person can drive onto there, and we’re going to have the smaller vehicles in front and then the large trucks and SUVs in the back, so as not to block the vision of people in smaller vehicles. It’s a safe opportunity for a family to get out and have a little fun.”
