The holidays usually mean more movies for everyone, blending every format possible from what we stream to what we read. The annual custom of seeing a new blockbuster on the big screen on Christmas Day will certainly see fewer movie-goers in 2020, but that doesn’t mean we can’t prepare for future events in which we partake in that beloved pastime.
Until that glorious day, we’ve weaved our way through a nice assortment of options sure to appear on any movie lover’s wish list this year, from affordable stocking-stuffers to pricier big ticket items including Blu-rays (yes, physical media!), gift cards, books on film and a few nostalgia items.
Check out our 2020 gift guide for cinemaniacs across the board.
Streamer subscriptions
The gift of subscriptions to the major streamers like Disney+, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and The Criterion Channel will go a long way with movie lovers who can catch up on classics they’ve missed and peruse the archives for cult hits they never thought they’d see, or they can just binge on their all-time favorites.
Donation to locally-owned theater
The pandemic has hurt corporate-owned chains, so you can only imagine the impact it continues to have on locally owned theaters. Donating in a loved one’s name might not put a movie in their hands or on their home screens, but it will contribute to the prospect of seeing a film in a historic or other building scratching and clawing to stay alive for the benefit of their respective communities. ‘Tis the season, after all.
AMC gift card
Theaters remain open, but COVID-19 has obviously changed the industry forever, at least until we return to whatever “normal” will look like again. When the time comes, you want to be prepared to join the multiplex again and watch movies with big crowds on Friday nights once it’s safe, or however you prefer to do it. For die-hard movie lovers, there’s nothing like seeing one, good or bad, on the biggest screen you can find. The future remains murky for larger theaters, so this is a small way you can keep hope alive.
The story of how Richard Linklater’s iconic film came together and why it worked, featuring behind-the-scenes photos and insights from nearly the entire cast, including Matthew McConaughey, Parker Posey, Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams, Wiley Wiggins and many others, and with full access to Linklater’s archives.
Without question, Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the greatest filmmakers alive. Author Adam Nayman (who wrote a similarly fascinating book on the Coen Brothers) delivers an illustrated monograph exploring the 30-year creative journey of the 8-time Academy Award–nominated writer and director behind “Boogie Nights,” “Magnolia,” “Punch-Drunk Love,” “There Will Be Blood” and “Phantom Thread.”
Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey describes the collection of diaries like this: “Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me.” Alabama photographer Miller Mobley shot the portrait of the actor on the book’s cover.
In the first ever behind-the-scenes story of Martin Scorsese’s gangster classic “Goodfellas,” film critic Glenn Kenny chronicles the making and afterlife of the film that introduced America to the real modern gangster. The book features interviews with the film’s major players, including Scorsese and Robert De Niro, understanding why remains one of the greatest movies ever made.
An intimate memoir by the controversial and outspoken Oscar-winning director and screenwriter about his complicated New York childhood, volunteering for combat and his struggles and triumphs making such films as “Platoon,” “Midnight Express” and “Scarface.”
From “The Birth of a Nation” to “Forrest Gump,” American filmmakers have been fascinated by the South. Author Ben Beard explores why the deeply complex and mysterious character of the South makes for compelling stories, examining those stories through the lenses of criticism and historical perspective.
Tom Cruise’s triumphant (and still active) action franchise has only gotten better with age. The fact that you can get all six of the existing movies on Blu-ray for just $15 makes this a no-brainer. You might say, “Physical media? In 2020? Gross!” This set comes with digital copies of each film, but what happens when your Wi-Fi goes out and you want to watch Ethan Hunt dangle from a helicopter or spear someone through a bathroom wall? What then?
“Mind-bending” doesn’t begin to describe Christopher Nolan’s latest thriller in which a hero (John David Washington) journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that unfolds in something beyond real time. No matter how complicated, it’s darn entertaining. Buy it so you can spend the next calendar year understanding it.
Cue the nostalgia. You typically see these buckets in the movies, sometimes at them, maybe back in the day. Pop your own kernels in the comfort of your home and dump them into these retro buckets that only build on the home theater atmosphere. (We spotted these first on Town & Country’s excellent list of gift ideas)
Bored? No Wi-Fi? No power? At the beach? Pretending you need an excuse to flex your jigsaw puzzle muscles? Bust out this bad boy and build a collage of some of the coolest retro posters for some of the greatest films of all time.
Technically speaking, these are wireless 2.4GHz RF transmitter charging dock, rechargeable digital stereo headsets for watching TV and playing computer games with 100-foot wireless range. If everyone’s in bed and you want to keep streaming (or you’d prefer the little ones not hear the naughty language), pop these on and enjoy the show, while everyone else is none-the-wiser.
OK, so you have Disney+, meaning you can watch any Marvel Cinematic Universe entry you want at any moment. It’s like having the streaming Infinity Gauntlet. But we know dorks like us still salivate over box sets as pure collectors items, and there are just too few sets with 27 movies from the same continuity. You can buy Phases 1-3 individually, too.
